General hydroponics dual diaphragm air pump. 20 liters per minute (20L/min). I own 2and they are the best I have yet. 1 is older thsn the other by 1 year. If I ever have any problems with it, GH sells re-build diaphram kits. Check out their website.

I use a 35 lpm 4 head pump. It is as quiet as a church mouse. Get large flat air stones (you may need to weigh them down). Put one in each bucket

I just want to caution you about some of the larger air pumps. They get very hot. That's why they come with the heat sinks on them. The air coming out of the pump is very warm and heats up the res. I have had much better luck with cheap fish tank pumps. I use pumps that are good for 50gal fish tank.
They are dual output. I use 2 4" air stones in each bucket. Another nice thing about going that way is that if a pump dies it's only one bucket and you can grab one of the stones from another bucket to get ya by till you can replace the bad pump. OK That's my long winded opinion.

I spent $25-30 on a pump from Walmart or pet smart over 5 years ago that has 4 outlets, a whisper quiet I think, and it has continuously run 4 buckets since.

Maybe but the small pumps don't push much air and you don't need as much air as you think. Bigger is not better IMO

There are air pumps (liters per minute/non submerged) which are connected to air stones and GPH pumps which are submerged

Could this be why it seems my pump isnt pushing much air? Its a dual spot aquarium air pump. How do I change the filter? Never realized thefe even was one.
