Air cooled reflector

Hi guys, I just wanted to ask a question regarding the glass in my reflector.

I moved recently and unfortunately the glass in one of my reflectors was broken by the moving company, the original glass was toughened glass and the problem I have now is that I live in quite a remote location and for me to get a replacement piece is going to take over three weeks, would I be able to use standard 4mm clear glass that is not toughened instead?

I have researched the properties of standard glass online and it states that it should hold up just fine under extreme heat, I am obviously running an appropriate fan to cool the lamps but just want to make sure before I go and install something and it goes and shatters all over my plants.

Any comments would be much appreciated,

Thanks for your response, I'm running three 600w in a line and am missing the glass in one reflector, I have given thought into not running the air line but in a month or two it is going to get hot around here and I need to keep the temp down.

I prefer to have the air cooled system running to save on the co2, have you heard any bad reports on using normal glass?

the problem is youll have to get the class cut to a custom size to fit anyways. Id suggest you order online or replace the hood and use it another time.

call any glass repair shop, most auto glass companies, or Henderson glass, hanson windows, or other house hold window company, have stock glass on hand and will cut to your specs instantly. for a piece of RAW (not tempered) (be SUPER careful around raw glass, if it breaks it WILL fuck you up very badly. I used to cut glass for a company. for an 1/8" piece about 24' x 36" will run you about 60.00 or less. if you go tempered glass, imo, the dual layer glass with the plastic middle will block too much light, or not let enough thru.

lowes or home depot may also have a glass cutting station available, but not 100% sure.

hey dude, thanks again for the reply, but I can get normal glass cut in 10 minutes down at the local hardware store, the problem with toughened glass is that it needs to be cut then sent away to get toughened, all I need to know is if normal glass will cut the mustard for one grow until I have the time to get another piece of toughened to replace the old one.

I'm under major time constraints at the moment as the clones are almost ready to go under the lamps and I can't wait three weeks at the moment, bad timing on my part granted, but shit happens unfortunately.

Hi Demon,

I can get normal glass cut straight away pretty close to where i am but I'm just worried that it may not take the heat of a 600w too well and I don't want tiny shards in my bud, do you think (raw) glass will take the heat of the lamp ok?

ive never heard of toughened glass in my life. im 42 yrs old, 15 yrs working in a bodyshop, 5 yrs as an auto technician, and 4 years in a glass shop (auto glass and residential/commercial glass).

glass comes in 3 general forms, tempered, raw, safety glass, not including speciality glass like bullet proof, mirror (2 way mirror glass).

Go bare bulb, it's cooler then an air cooled hood if set up right.
