Air Conditioner?

So... I'm curious why no one uses an air conditioner to keep their grow temps down? Is this because it's extra $? Or is there another reason?

I happen to have a small A/C that would go into a window or something... (you know, the size of a microwave or something)...

What would be the negative side to running this as oppose to piping ventilation?

I'm just guessing here but, out of experience. They draw a fair amount of amps 5-10 based on the size of the unit. We do a pretty good job of maxing out the circuits without them. They need to be vented to the outside and I think that most don't have that access, I don't. Since it's not just heat but, heat and water, blowing it into the attic or a crawl space is a poor option. The cool and dehumidify at the same time, cool for flower, not so much for veg. There are people here who use them, I think that it's just based on the set up. Like I said this is just a guess.

Haha i dont know what you're talkin about dude, but alot of growers use window units and portable units. I personally have to run my 8000btu portable ac unit 24/7 to keep my box at a max of 75degrees with a exterior loop cooltubed 600w. It also keeps my night temperatures at about 60-65, which is nice for bringing out my purples.

Its expensive to run one, and buy one (300-600 dollars) but i'll never go back to just ventilation alone.

Lots of folks use lots of different types of air conditioners with varying degrees of success. If you feel your environment is too hot then it's a good solution assuming stealth is not an issue, most window units allow for a "recirculate" setting that will (mostly) keep your CO2 in the room. Air conditioners WILL dehumidify your room, allow for the drop in humidity and you're fine. All that said, what is the fascination with "purple"? Just because it looks kinda cool?

I guess I just cannot recall seeing a small grow that utilizes a window unit A/C
Those 'small' grows where you do not 'see' the AC, is because it is in the room, but not 'in' the grow area..
Useing a box/tent/whatever, one isnt able to put that AC unit (protable or window) 'in' the actual
grow area. There isnt a grow/plant picture that I've ever taken that includes the portable AC ...but it 'is' there!
