Adventures in Drying/Curing... You won't believe what happened now!!

Ok, so my girlfriend was cleaning out the room we used to hang the lines, and guess what we found in the bottom of a laundry basket in there? Yup, a stick with about an eighth of bud on it. It was wrapped up in some clothes it fell in and forgotten about. The weird thing about my house, that I don't think I explained earlier, is that it's got concrete walls instead of just fiberglass insulation, so I get this weird kinda humid effect, like being in a cave almost. I don't know, all I know is when my house gets cold, it gets COOOLD, but it also stays really cool during the summer... Oh, and I have a couple giant trees giving me shade, so the sun doesnt hit my place too often, adding to the dank (I like dank, its good dank...)... ANyway, yeah, so I pulled this bud out and to be honest with you, it looked a little better than the shit I have in jars still... That stuff seems to be taking FOREVER to completely dry out. No mold or anything, it just seems sorta stuck in one spot. I almost feel like taking it out of the jars and putting back in paper bags for a day or two to speed it up a little... I guess if I just knew that keeping it in the jars was safe, even though it may have gone in a little fast, and that it will eventually do what its supposed to do regardless, I would feel better and not worry about it.. But if taking it out for a minute and speeding up the process would make the other stuff look like this one, well.. It was MUCH prettier to look at, it had a distinct smell when I cut it up, and smoking it!! Man, tasted GREAT, and I'm LIT!! Yeah, so, any thoughts on the subject? I'm trying to be patient, but I still want to do it right, you know? Id hate to find out that I put it in jars too wet or something, and end up screwing up the flavor and giving it that wet grass taste/smell...

You don't put bud in jars until it's dry to the touch. The idea is to draw out moisture in the center. Oh, and it's probably too humid in that room for drying. You best find another spot.

Wouldn't hurt to throw a couple of paragraph breaks in that wall of text there....

The safest proxies, don't allow java, which is crucial to page breaks. That said, put a min/max thermometer/hygrometer in the closet. Reset it daily and keep notes. I had bought a guys crop off the plant one time (great deal). About five months later I get a new computer desk. Moving out the old one I find a 7" bud in a gallon ziploc, unsealed, between old desk and wall. The top was just barely folded over. It looked very different than the rest I had dried and cured the normal way. Almost camouflage. Under miscroscope, I saw no mold or fungi so I hit it. Awesome. Dank. Much better tasting than big batch. I tried a few times to replicate it and ruined a few oz's. As for stuff in jars, did the stems snap without bending prior to placing in to the jars? If not you will be sweating those jars ten times a day to avoid problems. Does the pot have a "closed up wet" smell? I don't care the strains , put anything in a bag or jar moist and it smells the same, IMO. Patience is key to curing.

I just flip the lids on the jars so they're not sealed during the cure, that seems to work pretty well for me during the first part, while they're a lot more damp. Then as they even out more, I may seal up the jars (which aren't actually sealed, but that's another story).

I wonder why the weed you lose and find again is better. That's like losing a $100 and finding it again only to discover that it's transformed into a $150 bill.

A mistake that many people make is assuming that all the bud that has been hanging to dry is all dried out at the same time and thus is all ready to jar cure. The large dense buds, like those on the main cola take longer as they have retained more moisture. By placing all of them in the jar at the same time you are just redistributing the moisture from the large buds back into the small lengthening the cure time and gambling with mould. When I hang them to dry I place them in three categories based on how large or dense they are. As each group becomes sufficiently dried I move them to the jars where thay can all cure together. Another thing that I do during the first couple weeks of curing is monitor the moisture level of the buds. I actually dump them out for 10-20 minutes and move them around before placing them back in the jars. That way they all get repositioned in the jar and I have never had mould problems. After a couple of weeks I start the actual burping process.

Ok, that sounds like what I did, almost.. I pulled off the plant and trimmed the leaves off the buds. Then, when they were nicely trimmed, while still wet, I put them on lines for about 7-10 days. Of course, the first couple plants were on the line longer than the last few. THEN, I pulled from lines and did sort of a second trim. The buds were already nicely manicured from the first trim, so the second one was seperating the buds from all the stems. From here, I did the same thing you said, separated the buds into three different categories, by size. THEN, I put them in paper bags, about 3-4 inches full, in a room with the tops open, and a ceiling fan going. Then, into jars. They were in bags for about 30-36 hours (little more than a day). So, I think it was the redistribution of moisture thing. While I didn't mix big buds with littles, I mixed buds from the first day of the pull with buds from the 5th day, and those 5th day ones were probably a little more wet. So bottom line is, there is no mold, but, SHOULD I REMOVE FROM JARS AND PLACE IN PAPER BAGS FOR A DAY OR TWO? Or just leave it and expect a longer cure? Also, dont know if I mentioned this or not, but every day, I take the buds out of the jars, and put them back in. I empty them into large oven bags, and leave them in the bags for a couple minutes, agitate them a little, just so theyre not stuck together or anything, then back in the jar, I do this to allow the buds to move around, and also to completely circulate the air out of the jar. Maybe I should just leave the lids off for a day or two? I need help, I dont want to mess up my great harvest.. Also, what about the 30 day thing? I read that chlorophyll takes 30 days to breakdown completely, so, arent I waiting for that to happen before the true scent and smell will be present?

IMO... if you can make the cure take 30 days great, but worst case scenario you can get well cured buds by just drying them in paper bags and stirring the moister nugs to the outside of the bag once a day for about a week. You can cure buds in a week and it isn't like they aren't going to be smokeable.

Yeah, the problem isn't that I can't smoke it (I can, although the taste isn't quite all there, still a little harsh, too). But the smell is coming now (shit smells like STRAWBERRIES!! More like a strawberry patch than the actual fruit, though), especially when broken up. There are definitely many more crystals viewable by the naked eye as well... What Im saying is I think I put them in jars WAAAAY to early, and if I can leave em in there, and it's just going to take longer, and that's cool, then fine, I can live with that, BUT, if there is a chance I can screw it up by not drying it enough first, then I want to know if I can take them out of the jars, put them BACK in paper or plastic even (oven/turkey bags), and then wait a few days before they go back in jars, to get rid of alot of the moisture... I recently put about an .oz worth in a plastic bag and left it overnight. It already got more dry than the stuff in jars, and the smell hit me as soon as I opened the bag. I figure the drier it gets in there, the more thats going to happen.. So, I was wondering if maybe I shouldnt put it ALL in plastic bags for a day or two, then back in jars.. Can someone please help? Ive been looking for a definitive answer for days, and I havent been able to get one!

Yes, you can do that. If they're not dry enough, put them back via whatever method you use to dry more. If they're over-dried, you can rehydrate them.
