Adjusting PPM for tap water?

Let's assume someone uses tap water with a PPM of 200. Most guides say to shoot for 500 PPM in veg. So they would add 300 PPM of nutes.

However, someone using water with a PPM close to zero would be adding 500 PPM of nutes.

Does this lower level of nutes (200 PPM) significantly affect growth? Would you suggest correcting? (aka if starting with 200PPM water, adding nutes to get to 700 PPM to equate to the same amount of nutes?)

Without having your water tested there is no way to know for sure..
Start low and work your way up see how the plants respond..

The guide I go by says to not count the ppm of the water.

Your are not supposed to count the water ppm.

You add on top of that ppm. What is your starting ppm?

Also EC is easier for everybody. If your meter has ec use that.

Apparently you still have much to learn! (As do we all)

Not everyone grows in soil. Even still a pot of soil doesn't naturally have a neverending supply of nutrients.

So if a guide says 500 PPM and I have 100PPM water, I should end up with a 600 PPM measurement for my nutrient solution?

Its unambiguous and is what the meter is actually measuring rather than a derived multiplication factor which can vary between meters

Yea soil has nutes as well without npk plant will die.

I've got a lot of T-shirts and a bunch of certificates, even a diploma or two. I'ma call myself a master grower now. Thank you.

For all you ppm deficient EC guys so you can become multilingual unit wise. 35 years ago when I went back to school in my 30s to do chem I had to learn the metric system and that was a lot harder than this. Both my ppm pens read in ppm - 50 scale.

Totally agree with the above about not counting water ppm in your total. That's not to say that the minerals in your water aren't having an effect on your grow so I only use RO or distilled.

I have this printed out so it's always handy when talking EC.
