Adding side lighting to grow tents?

Just a random curiosity here - could you perhaps mount an 8 tube 4' CFL reflector on the sides of a grow tent to add side lighting? I'm thinking of getting a 5x5 tent with a 1000 watt HPS bulb with a 6" cool tube, and having 3 sides mounted with 8 tubes might provide insane lighting for the plants. Has anyone tried experimenting with this or have thought about it? It may be difficult to set up but I think once you got the proper setup it would provide a huge boost in yield. Any experienced growers here care to comment?

ya t5's or t8's. cant hurt. But 1000 in a 5x5 is good tho, and if heat becomes an issue the side lighting wont matter

I may invest in an XXL 8" Cool Tube Hood & Ballast kit, pretty pricey but I've heard good things about the XXL. I'd be running an 8" inline duct fan to vent the tube (400 CFM, maybe overkill?), in addition to a 6" 440 CFM inline exhaust fan as well as a 6" carbon filter. Side lighting aside - how's that sound?

yes T5 HO units mounted against the walls of the tent work great. Gives you the opportunity to balance the light spectra against the hps by mixing different tubes.
If you shop carefully there are some great deals on ebay. Lots of selection to pick from, just look for units that accomodate side mounting. Multiple 4 tube units would be easier to manage, than equivalent 8 tube units.

You may be right about using 4 tubes instead of 8, might be hard to manage easily. Do these fixtures require ballasts or can they just plug into the wall, and furthermore how would you suggest one would mount them against the walls of the ten, perhaps hang them from the top supports on the walls of the tent might work. Definitely plan on doing this if I wind up getting a tent. Side lighting seems like a great way to increase yield and plant growth overall.

Most of them have the ballasts inside the unit, plgs straight into 120Vac.
Hanging them from above is the easiest, either ceiling, or tent frame if they are strong enough.
could also be wall mounted.

Im in a 5x5 with a600w going. I had my t5 4bulb in there along with it.....temps stayed around 86-92 degrees. I removed the t5 and temps drop to 74 at night 81 in the day. Using a 6" H.O. 440 can fan thru an air cooled hood also. Gonna try and turn it up to a thou and hope heat stays down otherwise i have to grab my portable a.c. out the closet. This is also in the middle of winter with the bedroom window wide open.

Heat will be your villain in a 5x5 with all the side lighting...
