ABV Suggestions

Having switched over to no combustion several years ago, I end up with a good bit of ABV that still has some potency (I usually vape @ 210C, get 4 hits off a load, and don't go up in temp). Since part of the reason I switched to vaping was the amount it stretches my herb, I've been considering what I could do with the ABV in the edibles realm. Prior to this, a friend of mine down on his luck would come by and get the ABV, mix it 50/50 with some herb, and bong it.

Seems there are two sides of the camp: those who treat the ABV to a cold water bath for like 2-3 days prior to cooking, and those who simply use it straight. The cold water bath is time consuming, but is supposed to remove any bitter or "vaped" taste to the ABV prior to using in edibles.

Anyway, anyone here have any experience with ABV? Any gotchas or tips for a first time edible maker (am a cook, so the technical skill set I have)? Opinions on the cold water bath?

Thought I would see if anyone had any wisdom they would care to impart. Either way, thanks for taking the time to read.

As Always,
Crain

I can’t really offer any tips, but I used unwashed ABV for my last coconut oil, and it really does have a nutty, burnt popcorn like taste to it, even when used in food it is noticeable. I don’t mind it but it is too strong for my wife.
Next batch will be washed. Don’t know how much difference it will make, but at least she hopefully will be able to eat edibles without retching!
I think it is a case of everybody is different, you may be fine with it unwashed, then again it might make you heave!

Actually, this is a great answer about the cold water bath: unwashed, it does have a noticable taste to it. So I can plan for that. Taste'll probably be like cilantro ... there are those people it tastes horrible to. Cold wash and do bittersweet dark chocolate brownies. That should help mask anything.

This is a old dead thread but I’m trying water curing my ABV for the first time.
I’ve used my unwashed ABV with trim and shake to make Canna butter in the past and it definitely turns the butter a little brown and less green, the brown usually settles to the bottom of the butter. And I’ll agree the ABV added a mild nutty burnt popcorn flavour.

I should have taken pictures along the way but I’m a stoner and don’t think of these things until after.
I had 14.2 Oz of vaped weed sitting around so I took a pair of my GF garbage leggings and ‘bagged it’ twice.
At this point it’s day 3 of soaking and I’ve changed the water 2 times daily.

I’ll update with a gross coffee coloured water tomorrow.
And I’m curious what the final weigh will be after water cure and low temp oven dry on cooking sheets

Did a cold alcohol extraction with my ABV

I turned the tincture into an ABV simple syrup
Third jar from left to right
Use it in the evening for sedative effect but need to get an outside opinion

Please report back on your water cure attempt
I have some water cured ABV in the freezer waiting for extraction
A question came up on another site about whether or not we are losing potency in the water cure due to the the brittle state of any left over trichomes

How long did you water cure? I’m going for 7 days and I’ll see what the water looks like.
Edit- re read and saw you did a alcohol extraction, so you didn’t do a cold water extract?

thc is not water soluble so it’s gotta be hard for it to wash out I’m thinking. Your probably right when you freeze weed the tricombs break off super easy so heating it to high end vape temps probably make them brittle too.

I’ll have to see how potent this is when it’s done and let you know

I did my water cure for 2 days
Forgot that I had put some extracted material that still had alcohol in it into the mix
Turned the water cloudy
Hope I dried the material enough before beginning the extraction
I filtered my tincture like crazy to make it palatable

This is the final stage of the tincture being filtered

I’m just following a combination of Reddit suggestions.
7 days water cure, they say water will be clear by then(he did a oz) I’m doing 14oz so it might take 10 days we’ll see.

after cure spread out the weed on baking sheets and throw in the oven low at 140-150.
Making sure to open the door every once in awhile to allow the humidity to escape and to mix the product around.

Im gonna infuse coconut oil this time.
