About to start my first grow... help me out please!

Hey guys, I've read a whole bunch of threads on these forums which have inspired me to start my own little grow. This is my first post so hello everybody! Excuse my inexperience but there's a whole lot of information for me to absorb at once so I'm trying to clarify some things before I get started so I don't mess anything up too bad.

I've already germinated some bagseed (2 of 6 seeds have sprouted so far) and am going to pick up some supplies on Tuesday to get my grow room ready to go. Here are my questions:

1. Is it bad to leave my seeds germinating (i.e. in the wet paper towels) for a few days while I get my room set up?

2. I'm planning on using a bathroom with an exhaust fan already installed as a grow room. Will this work in respect to airflow? I am 95% certain I can keep the room light-tight for flowering. Will an oscilating fan in the room improve airflow or will opening the door every once in a while suffice? It's a relatively small room - think walk-in closet size - but it's the only room in the house that's suitable to modify for growing.

3. Can I transfer my germinated seeds to a full size pot immediately or do I need to go plastic cup > pot?

4. As I'm using bagseed, I don't know what kind of strain I'm getting. Should I begin with an 16/8 lightcycle as soon as I plant my seeds?

5. I really don't know what brands/types/etc to get when I go shopping on Tuesday. I'm going to grow 2 plants maximum - I need to know:
a. How much power do I need (i.e. how many bulbs and what wattage)? Planning on getting CFLs unless someone recommends something else that isn't too bulky - remember, I have a small room to work with.
b. Soil and fertilizer. I'm buying things at a store so does anyone recommend any brands that are relatively common? Also, when do I start feeding and how often do I feed them?

6. Are reflective walls absolutely neccesary? I'd prefer not to get any mylar because this is just an everyday bathroom (which I won't be using for a while obv. lol) but if it's neccesary I guess I can make do. My walls are currently beige-ish in color.

7. Finally, I know I need blue spectrum for veg and red for flowering. If I get two different bulbs for each, can I leave both running for both cycles or should I disconnect one when I reprogram my timer?

Once again, I apologize for my idiocy when it comes to this stuff, but I've read so many threads that I'm just trying to sort everything out before I begin. Thank you all for the inspiration and any help you can offer!

Dont feel bad Im new at growing as well but pretty much learned a good bit of stuff by experimenting... The fan in your bathroom should be just fine...you dont have to have all top notch fancy stuff like top of the line soil and chemicals to grow...any decent potting soil mixed with a little water when you first plant will be fine. However, the best soil is soil you mix yourself which is prolly somewhere on this site...where you mix it with lime and all that stuff...as for your germination question...Its not a bad or good thing to leave them in there...as long as its not too long because the seeds roots will actually start growing into the paper towel and if you try to pull them out you could damage the root and waste a plant..as for the other question about the pot...Ive never had a problem with planting them right into a big pot...always worked fine with me and you cut out the part where you have to transfer the plant and risk plant shock...if you are growing indoors a medium size pot should do fine...also how long did it take the 2 seeds to sprout...it doesnt take my seeds long at all to germinate...i had 15 sprouts within a day in half with inch long roots already...i just wet a paper towel...squeeze out the water so its just moist put about 8 - 10 seeds in it and fold them up and put them in a zip lock bag with no air...( a jar works real well also) and put them in the top of the closet about 2 days. hope this helps...from a noob to a noob :P

Hey man thanks for the helpful response! It only took about two days for there to be a visible root out of two of my seeds. I tossed 6 seeds between 2 wet paper towels and put them in a tupperware container which I then stored in a cabinet in my garage, giving them air a few times a day. So far it looks like 2 are almost ready to plant and another is about to break through. I took the 6 seeds from a baggie which I've been storing seeds in over the years, so I have no idea what they even are! Hopefully some Sour Diesel got thrown in. :weed: Gonna try and find a good soil mix recipe so I can get these babies growing asap! Thanks again.
Also I know I read not to tell anybody about my plants but I was so excited to start growing that I accidently let one of my buddies know. Should I be worried or am I just being way paranoid? lol

Hi and welcome to the forum!

1. I wouldn't worry about a few days, just know that the new root is very delicate - and too much water or drying out, either way, will probably kill it.

2.Depends on what type of lighting you decide to use, as diff lights put off diff amounts of heat. Do use an oscillating fan anyways - the other purpose of it is to help your young plants to develop strong stems.

3. Yes you can - feel free to put it right into the biggest container you plan on useing!

4.You can begin your preferred light cycle as soon as you plant them - the tiny sprout will be looking for light as soon as it breaks the surface! What you use seems to be a personal preference - I go 18/6 myself.

5.If you're useing CFL's, I think most people here would tell you the more, the better - so how many is up to you, but a couple per plant would be ok to start with.

Soil - I couldn't find a lot of the reccomended varieties locally for me - I got Scott's Potting Soil from Home Depot, price is decent and it has been working well for me. DO NOT feed your plants until they are a month old - so you have plenty of time to read and decide what nutes you want to go with.

6. Flat white paint is reflective enough, no you don't have to have mylar.

7.I think 2-1 is a better ratio if you're going to go mixed spectrum, so 2cool one warm for vegging and vice versa for flower.

Good luck with your grow!:peace:

Thanks for the awesome information man! I checked my germinating seeds after work today and 2 of them have some wicked long roots already so I went and planted them outside in some seedling pots for the time being. I know people advise against Miracle Grow but it was all I had at the time, and my other seeds are sprouting so I'm gonna just keep my 2 planted ones outside and see how they fare. Once I get my room set up and get some more reliable soil I'll plant the other ones inside. Wasn't expecting all my seeds to sprout so eagerly so we'll see what happens!
