in a 2x2x5 grow area with a plant about six inches tall, a month and a week in. what kind of light should I use to promote better growth, I have those twisted looking mercury lights on, two of them, with a combine wattage of 26.. -.-

looks good. Be careful with that soil being covered though. Its easy to develop mold or mildew problems if soil doesnt get any air.
As for the light, it all depends on your budget and grow space ventilation

Thank you, I moved the foil, hopefully that will lessen the risk. At what hight would you say is appropriate to get at least 1/2-3/4 of a oz.? It's maybe 5 to 5 and a half inches tall now and has five nodes...

She seems quite small for 5 weeks of veg dude, I would look into changing up your lighting system. I use CFL's simply because I like to stay off the energy usage radar, plus the convenience of low heat in a small space, but you need at least 100W for that girl. And if you can manage more, then get more. And at that height, no. Specially not with your lights.

Get CFL's, I'd suggest in seperate lamps, helps distribute the light better. The more wattage per bulb, the better. I've got 130 watts directing on my plant with 5 bulbs. It's just a closet grow, but if you pay attention, and take care of the plant, you can still get a decent yeild.

Nice plant but slow. That's because you put a new seedling straight into a big pot. Takes weeks for the roots to grow out
enough before you see real growth aboveground. You can get more growth by transplanting into a small pot for a couple weeks first.
I suggest putting new seedlings into a solo cup for a couple weeks.

Yep as big Steve said roots will fill out pot then you will notice growth above the soil. Also you may run into some other problems like bottom of pot being full of water and top of soil being dry due to water sinking to bottom of pot just plain old gravity but as your roots reach bottom you may see signs of root rot as you are watering for pot size not plant size.

If you don't over-water, you shouldn't run in to this problem. But if you feel that the bottom stays wet too long after watering, next time you water let the runoff stop, then place the pot on a stack of paper towels and they will leach out the excess water in the soil.

Roots search for water your medium needs to be evenly watered. As you are in big pots keeping all the medium moist will lead to the problem I stated earlier. It's no good using paper towels etc to soak up water as when you water again it will keep happening until your plant gets bigger.

1 gram per watt is what people say, so 26 watts, 26 grams, 100 watts, 100 grams. Fuck the tiny grow area and give it some room, so you can be happy when it's done growing.

Yeah, the paper towel suggestion was one to hold him over till they got bigger. Sort of like having much better drainage and can be done until the plant can actually handle and use that moisture. On one hand it seems you are telling him to evenly water his soil, but then saying doing that will cause root rot. I do agree an the graduating transplants, letting the roots somewhat fill out a pot before going up a size, so not trying to argue with you on the concept.
On a side note, I don't even see where he said how big his pot even is.:eyesmoke:

1 gram per watt is doing really good. Not average, and not easy. I would say if you pull .5 gram per watt on your first grow, you're off to a good start.

Lol u've done this to me twice now
Not riding you. Just trying to not get new growers hopes up too high. Its a nice target though, but the whole 1 gram per watt hinges on so many different things. If I have a 1000w hid with one plant, I would have to yank 3 pounds off that thing just to make 1 per. Same with a single 40w cfl over one plant. It will be rather difficult to make that plant yield 40 grams. Plants-to-light ratio has to be good to make the numbers work.

First off you should get a 250 watt light setup. Fuck cfl bulbs I myself use HID bulbs(HPS, MH) for my grows. For the amount of CFL's you'd have to use would bring the same amount of heat that the 250 watt light and wouldn't put out the same intensity of lumens to penetrate a 2' plant properly. If you're gonna grow right, grow smart.
