A Quote From H.L. Mencken ...

"The state -- or, to make matters more concrete, the government -- consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get, and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time it is made good by looting 'A' to satisfy 'B'. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is a sort of advanced auction on stolen goods." - H.L. Mencken

You guys need to move out of the country, Go to a place where there are no taxes and walk in the sewer laden streets, sleep in a tin shack and drive on muddy roads, go to the witch doctor when you are sick, and hoard all your money. That is the taxless society!

On the contrary, Med ... what you have described is a country where the government (the few) is plundering the many. Have you ever visited Mexico?

Been there, done that. That is the result of either a government that is totally corrupt or one that doesnt collect enough taxes. Let me fill you in on a small window of the mexican tax structure. When I was in Puerto Vallerto, I asked a taxi driver why was there re-bar sticking out of every house and building that I saw. The answer, If there was re-bar (Reinforcing steel for concrete) sticking out of your residence, it means that you are not through building and untill you finish your house, they can't asses a tax! so every one in Mexico pays no property tax. I wish they had that law here, I'd head for the re-bar store Mock schnell. So now you know why in Cabo San Lucas, the only paved street it the main one. Go off the main street one block and its dirt! The same for every major town except large cities like Acapulco, Mexico City, and Mazitlan! If we don't start using some of our tax money here at home to fix the roads and highways, instead of spending 8 billion a day in Iraq, we'll think we're in Mexico!

I've seen the rebar too, Med. Never knew why until now. But ... the reason Mexican citizens live in abject poverty has nothing to do with rebar or taxes. Do you honestly believe that if the government required the rebar to be covered up, then taxed the poor, that the people would become "middle class" because of it? There are just a few wealthy families who control Mexico, and as Bastiat described back in the 1850s, they are the few who plunder the many.
