I will concede that point. it apparently IS possible, in fact they even managed to get them to mature in about a 1/4 of the time in the wild. i still believe it will go extinct in the wild though.

Summary

Ten females of Kaluga sturgeon (Huso dauricus; 73.8 ± 6.49 kg, total length 204.5 ± 12.8 cm) matured for the first time after a full life-cycle in captivity. Absolute gonad biomass was 8.4 ± 1.3 kg per female and relative fecundity 11.2 ± 1.6%, at maturation stage IV. These fish were induced to spawn by injection of hormone LHRH-A2 at a dosage of 10 μg kg[SUP]−1[/SUP]. Male Kaluga was injected one time at 5 μg kg[SUP]−1[/SUP] and milt was stripped 16 h after injection of LHRH-A2. Water temperature was about 16 ± 1°C during the induction period. Fertile eggs were obtained 36.8 ± 2.6 h after first injection; they were fertilized by semi-dry method. Fertilization rate was 80.7 ± 3.8%. Fertilized eggs were incubated McDonald jars (hatching rate 85.2 ± 9.8%). There was a strong correlation between body weight (x) and time (y) needed from hormone injection to obtaining fertile oocytes (y = −0.8231x + 98.838 R[SUP]2[/SUP] = 0.8428; P < 0.01). The cultured males ripened as early as at age 5 while females were 8-years old at first maturity.

Yeah, species have been going extinct for millions of years...I understand than mankind has had a greater impact on our current ecosystem than most events throughout the course of the planets history, but hey, there HAVE been several mass extinctions on the planet before. I'm sure life on Earth will go one somehow, whether or not that Earth can sustain human life, well, that's another story.....

indeed, the recovery for the great dying is believed to be much longer than any of the other 5 main mass extinctions and 30 million years is the top estimate for complete recovery. 30 million years is nothing.

overhunting and overfishing combined with habitat destruction killing off species is not good for the future of humanity in the less distant future though.

Yeah, well, we sorta screwed the pooch on this go around...maybe we'll do better on the next planet. Or...there could be a mass dieoff of humans, you never know what lies around the corner. But with the population exploding the way it is, and average life expectancy still increasing, it's not looking good.

yeah, it is awful to say but a large epidemic of a new deadly virus might do us some good as a species overall.
Doesn't have to be a deadly virus...Nuclear war in which most major world cities are targeted would probably do the trick too, though that is opening up a whole new can of worms as far a global ecological disasters are concerned. No, I think we're cursed to follow the fate we've chosen, and will probably continue to deplete the natural resources we have, go to war with other nations to control their assets, and eventually start to die off from starvation and pestilance. Care for a soylent taco, my friend?

I go to a river all the time that has one of the highest populations of sturgeons. You will see one just about every minute come jumping out of the water. No one fishes them of course but it is still amazing that I've lived here and got to see them. I've heard stories of them jumping from the water and actually landing on and killing people, or just crushing the boat. Doesn't stop me from getting my exercise and swimming across the quarter mile wide river them or the alligators.
