A Germination Fail?

I was recently germinating my seeds with a sandwich bag. I look at them today, and this white thing is sprouting from them (I assumed it was a root.) I gave them some extra water, since it was getting dry. I think I put a bit too much, but I shrugged it off. I just looked at it again and the seeds were broken open. Does this mean they're ready to plant? I took one out of the bag and broke it, but it was probably already broken.

Are they ready to plant, or did I give them too much water? And if they're ready to plant: How long will I have to plant them?

EDIT: Oops, I broke a piece off the edge of the root, will the seed still be good?

once the tap root is about 1/4" long, I plant them. Don't touch the roots. You may have killed that one but can't hurt to plop it in soil.

Put them each in its own solo cup with drain holes. I use MG seed starter and mix in about 30% added perlite. Make the soil dame, not wet. Take a baggie and put one slit in the top. Mist water into it and place over the cup and repeat daily. Keep them someplace warm and avoid the temptation to water all the time. Works great for me!

As strange as it sounds, those seeds can be put into dirt before they are germinated, thus preventing all the damage to the roots you have inflicted.

As for the advice above on putting a dome over your seedlings, I would argue it is the worst thing you can do for them. I did this in earlier days and maybe 50% of my seedlings survived. It is truly a great way to kill seedlings from root rot or damping off.

Absolutely true. I'll loosely lay a piece of saran wrap over my cups (I always put seed directly in soil) and the moment it breaks ground the plastic is off. They need fresh air for one thing, and they will start dropping like flies the longer you leave them trapped under plastic with no air flow. Damping off big time.

I still can't figure out why people want to complicate the ever living hell out of germinating a seed! I have a 3 step process that has yet to fail me.

Step 1: PH a piece of rock wool.
Step 2: Stick seed in rock wool
Step 3: Stick rock wool cube with seed in Plagron Grow Mix and slightly cover the top.

That's it, folks! Works every damn time just make sure you're not buying shitty seeds and blaming everything but your shitty seeds if it doesn't pop.

My process is one step:

Step 1: Put seed about 1/4" deep in pre-moistened starter mix

I just started some seeds I brought back from Mexico.

Thought I would experiment with germination mediums.... 2 in rock wool, 2 in plugs and 2 in potting soil..... tap water.....sitting on a heat source in darkness.

Cool. Why don't you do a couple on paper towels then try transplanting into one of those mediums. Seriously, thats what half the people do.

I used to do the paper towel method but I'm just too lazy and prefer the simple lazy man fool proof technique...what can I say, I smoke way too much and have limited energy to spend on such a frivolous task.

Running a test before I get ready for my outdoor grow in a couple of months.

First I placed them in a cup of water for about 18 hours. Once placed on a platter with cover, using the paper towel technique, i had no problems. In 24 hours my seeds had opened and i didn't wait any longer, I then placed them (shoot side down) in a Solo cup and cover loosely with plastic wrap (with slits along the top) till they sprouted, about 48 hours.

Just be sure to take the plastic off after 48 hours and you're good to go.

I do respect Sun King and his more streamlined approach though and look forward to the test outcome.

I may start a journal on this if it becomes interesting, but I predict no big difference between the mediums....it's just a damn weed that's program to grow and reproduce, all it needs to sprout is water, warmth and darkness, it's not rocket science

SK, Just got my 4x8 T5's and will probably start a journal on this grow. I have my plot tilled and fenced off now just waiting for the right time to start my pre-outdoor prep. I'm running some tests now for timing from germination to "ready to transplant" in late May. I want the plants to be less than 12 inches and probably looking to start late Feb as I don't want the babies to get too used to vegging in the pots indoors.

Just reading up as much as I can on the forum till the 2014 grow season prep starts in earnest.

As ^ buds said, be gentle with them fuckers... The white thing that looks like a mini anal probe from a circular shaped extraterrestrial that is the marijuana seed, is a tap root (tap like tapping a keg aka the life line of the seed) once this shows regardless of size, it's pretty safe to say its at-least semi-healthy and can be planted in whatever medium you have chosen.
