A friend has spider mites after harvest

i got half z from him and noticed an awful lot of mites on the buds, is it atall possible these came after harvest or would they not attack a plant whats no longer living

Hes really took it to heart & wants to quit growing because of the setback ( 27z all mited up) is it possible to even do anything to help remove them without ruining his weed
