Hello! I'm new here... this is my first post at rollitup -- I started this journal on a much smaller forum a week ago or so and I'd rather get some broader feedback. So I will post all my progress so far.
DAY 6 (Feb 5th - after seed sprouting)
I thought I'd post a few pictures of my 2nd attempt at growing random bagseed with a DWC technique. Checked my pH today and it's sitting at 6.2 so I am happy with it, but I don't want it to stray any higher. My first grow failed due to spider mites, so I am trying to mitigate that this time with a humidifier and also I did a thorough cleaning of the grow area before beginning.
The light is a Sun System T5 two-foot, 4 bulb fixture with two 6500K's and two 3000K's suspended by sunlifts. I am in a condo with hydro included, so I don't want to run anything too electricity-hungry. (I'd love to get a 400W in there but I think heat would be an issue.)
Currently I am trying to think of a way to incorporate a filter. I have a cool-mist humidifier just in case, but the closet currently sits around 25-30% RH and the temperature ranges from around 23 to 25 C.
I'm thinking of abandoning the DWC and going to 4 pots with coco and manual watering or perhaps a drip irrigation system. I did end up doing this as you'll see...

DAY 8
I did some measuring and I can fit 6 plants in this same space if they're potted, so once I can get down to the hydro store I'll get the pots and coco.
With 4 or 6 plants, I should have no problem keeping up with hand watering.
Until then, I've added more hydroton to support and bury the stems more.

DAY 11
Yesterday and today I sourced some of the stuff I needed to transition this to a coco grow.
- Picked up those plastic pots from the dollar store -- total fucking win. I drilled out more vents on the bottom and I'm going to drill some holes in the rim for some sweet LST action later on (hence the twine and velcro strapping).
- Cocopeat from Canadian Tire, $5.99 and this stuff goes a hell of a long way!! Wow.
- Already had the Pure Blend Pro but I went and picked up some Liquid Karma and Cal Mag.
- Today I picked up a bottle of Superthrive, some AquaShield, and some sulfur powder just in case I need it later.
This compressed coco is neat. I didn't go with the expensive stuff from the grow store because I figured I will just flush the shit out of this cheap stuff. How different could it be, really? I figure the differences can be washed away with an excellent rinse. Plus I live a couple blocks from Canadian Tire anyway so it was a quick walk.
Here's a couple pictures showing the coco brick up close. This is a 5kg brick I believe.
And closer...
(I ended up using about an inch and a half of this in total if you measure from the bottom of the brick)
Shit is so easy to mix... you can't possibly screw it up. I just made a nice slurry and as I grab it out of the soup, it clumps and is easy to put in the pots.
Once it's all in the pots, I just ran them under warm water at first -- a lot, probably for 3 or 4 minutes per pail. After the warm water rinse, I packed everything down tightly and gave each of them another rinse in cold water for a couple minutes.
After letting them sit for a couple hours, I checked the drip saucers for any discoloured runoff and there was none. Just to be safe I gave them another rinse in cold water and let them sit overnight. I also mixed my nute brew.
In this brew I've got:
- 3 litres of Brita filtered water
- 7.5 mL of Pure Blend Pro Grow
- 2.5 mL of Cal Mag
- 7.5 mL of Liquid Karma
- 5 mL of AquaShield
- 0.5 mL of Superthrive
I'm a little nervous about doing this transplant, since these girls are starting to get a fair bit of root mass outside the net pots. Tomorrow will be the day though for sure... I can't let it continue in the DWC for too much longer.
Here is one of the girls yesterday:
Here she is today:
And here are the roots... bloody rooooots...
I am wondering if I should cut the net pot away from the plant, or just dump the hydroton and bury the roots, net pot, and plant up to it's first set of proper leaves.
I'll take a look at it more in-depth tonight (this morning) and figure something out.
Thanks for watching!

DAY 13
Finally did the transplant early this morning (2am or so). I couldn't be happier with the end result. Here are the girls sitting on my kitchen counter just moments before the transplant:
I painted what will become the flowering section of the closet with a flat white primer. Also installed some cable ties for the light and fan. I'm real picky when it comes to details.
Here's the first one in her new pot:
I gave them a very diluted sip of the brew I mixed a couple days ago just to aid in the transplant. There was a bit of runoff which I tested the pH and it was higher then I wanted -- around 7 -- but I expected that really because that's what my cold tap water is at.
They sat under low light in my living room for an hour or so after I finished potting them. This gave the closet a chance to air out a bit more from the paint. Then they went back in the closet with the light a fair distance away.
The leaves seemed a bit droopy at first, as evidenced in this picture after I got them back in:
I hoped for the best and went to bed.
When I woke up this morning, they were all perked up and looking good!
The coco is very moist so I don't plan on giving them any more water or nutes for a couple days at least. No runoff in my saucers. I'll keep an eye on it though, definitely.
Here's the latest picture I have of them all perked up:
And a nice macro shot
Comments, questions and feedback are definitely welcome! I look forward to posting updates.
