So I just got given a 70w sodium bulb and was wondering if it's worth buying a ballast to use it, I am using a 250w cfl for flower at the mo but my blue cheese is nearly ready to flower and was wondering if there was any advantages to changing lights???? also does anyone know the lumen output of these bulbs???? any info would be great! thanks

I really don't think that you need a ballast with lower wattage HPS bulbs.

Doesn't it fit into a normal light socket?

That's odd, I guess that circuit was overloaded.

Try unplugging something and see what happens.

I do know that an 250 hps is aprox 30000 initial lumes and 600 are aprox 90000 so my educated gues would be approx 8000 initial lumes. Of course it varies depending on the company that makes the bulb and the shroud you use.

The hps bulbs are unmatched for the flowering phase. Your compact floresents or metal halides I would only use for the veg phase.

amen.

you NEED HPS. not a question about whether it will help.

150watt HPS is ~16,000 lumens. That is, a GOOD bulb. Some random 70w HPS, i would say realistically is 7,000 lumens.

thats GOOD though, thats a ton of light, for just one plant, maybe 2 with the cfl's added.

Hello, i don't mean to hi-jack this thread but i think the question is relevent, I'm thinking about going out to buy a 70W HPS and i was curious if they fit into smaller grow box than their bigger versions... specifically, i hear people hanging 250/400W HPS bulbs at least 18 inches to 25inches away from their plants but would you be able to get the smaller 70W HPS bulb about a foot from your plants or will they receive burning from the lumens and/or the proximity of the lamp?

(p.s. i don't really know what lumen burn is but it seemed like a possibility with so many lumens coming out from a single position, so close)
