70 Watt HPS Question

Hey, I just bought a 70 watt HPS because I knew it has a medium base like regular light bulbs. I screwed it in a few different sockets and it didn't come on. I waited 10 minutes to see if it had to heat up before turning on. It didn't come on. The package says "for use only with ANSI S62 ballast." I assumed it would work with a regular socket.

My question is this:

Did I buy a dud bulb or is this S62 ballast something I need in order for it to work?

seriously, you need to learn alot more before even thinking of setting up a grow

I'll offer some help. What you want to do for a low wattage HPS grow, is buy a "security light" from lowes etc.. they run about 40 bucks, go ahead and return the bulb you bought and buy a security light. You can extend the wires running to the socket, and wire a cord onto the "input" end. disable the light sensor with tape, and you're set.
