7" Square Pot Soil SOG; 600w Closet Grow

Hi everybody, this is my first post on RIU. I've been lurking here for about 3 months and have almost 3 small closet grows under my belt. So far I have been using a combination of Fox Farms Soil with their Tiger Bloom and Big Bloom nutrients. My past grows have been 6 - 8 plants per grow of Blueberry and Sage n' Sour, but am looking to increase yields with less veg and more plants per square foot (SOG). Here is what I'm considering for my next setup:

- 3' X 3.5' X 5.5' area (flower)
- Small CFL setup for clones and moms
- 24 qty- 7" Botanicare square pots (1.5 gal) perpetual garden (8 about every 3 weeks)
- 600w HPS with hood & 4" inline fan for exhaust
- 12 in fan inside the closet
- The strains I'm working with now are Fire OG, GDP, and Sage n' Sour

I have some questions if any experts out there can help:

- Heat during the summer will be a problem, but I can't really modify my place because I rent.
- Odor is killing me, but I think I'm gonna get a DIY carbon filter that blows exhaust above a mixture of water and Ona Gel. Any thoughts on this?
- Would you guys do a straight to 12/12 after rooting or veg for 1 or 2 weeks because of my height restrictions.
- I'm thinking of pond liner for my closet floor for water runoff. Anybody use it before?

Hey, sounds like most of the things you are thinking are good. The pond liner I actually do (as well as SOG). I built boxes out of 2x4 and OSB then lined it with the pond liner. That keeps the water in (and the floor dry). Also I would think veg to 4'' to 6'' max with your height restriction. The main concern I see is the idea of doing perpetual grow...you only have one light so the canopy would be best to be one height...unless you plan to raise and lower your plants to prevent shading.

If you do one main cola and very short veg there should be no problem with the plant count. Heat problem and exhaust you have to figure out on your own since we can't see the space you are working with.

Thanks for the response Medhead. I was thinking of getting a couple of shallow tray like containers to lift the 16 plants that are in earliest flower. Haven't figured that part out quite yet. plus, the sage n' sour goes a little longer than the other 2 indicas, so I have two concerns with my ideal setup. I just figured because my veg room is so small and I'd like to spread the work out (a little busy sometimes with a part time job), that a perpetual might be the answer.

Do you have a soil bed or are you using pots? how much soil space do you give each plant? I saw a journal talking about tree pots that are 4" square by 16" tall. They hold 2 gallons in a smaller space, but I don't know if the canopy will be to tight even with a lollipop and zero veg.

I was wondering also how tall of a cutting I should take off the mother. some of my first attempts have been 2- 3", but I wonder if I should go for larger, thicker ones. I've had good luck with smallish clones so far, but I have vegged them for at least a month after rooting.

Yeah, I personally use 3 gallon pots and bags. These pots http://www.sunlightsupply.com/p-11911-maxipot.aspx They are a bit pricey but very nice. Then again I run 6 600watt lamps and over 100 plants

Your first grow looks nice...if you want bigger containers look into grow bags..theres all different sizes on e bay....plus rep for great first grow...happy growing...

The cheapest I found the 7" pots for was $2, but I might try different sizes to dial it in. 6 600's is a nice set up! do you take your cuttings at 3" or so?

Thanks DSB65. I thought about grow bags, but want to have square containers to maximize my small floor space. I wonder if they make square grow bags?

Yeah, my cuttings are 3 -4''...Those grow bags may look square but they are still a plastic bag and when filled up they are round...I have used them and know this for a fact.
