4 x 4x8 tents, 2 x 4x4 tents. 10 x Growers Choice E420. One of the 4x4s was for Veg to collect clones, 9 lights dedicated to flowering.

3 x 35 pint dehumidifiers, no AC.

Ran lights at 25% during veg and 100% during flower. Plain Coco, no perlite. Food Macros only Emerald Harvest A & B, no additives.

Seeds were an assortment of gear I made. Started with 560, lost 60 from root rot issues with grow medium at beginning of project.

Initially used prefilled bags but had to transplant into bagged coco.

Eight 10x20in clone trays can fit under a light if you don't have a fan on the ground. Each clone tray fits 8 x 6in pots. I find this the easiest size to use as it allows for normalized growth of the plant in one container and you can make it 24hours without having to water more than once.

Switched from 24hr to 12hr light after 4 weeks from planting. Due to the varying size of plants across strains plants are organized by height. Because the plants range in sizes I am hand watering each plant/tray individually.

Uniform canopy is important not just for light penetration, but also for being able to access plants in all parts of the tent.

Clones taken starting at 3 weeks into flower after males and most herms have been culled. Did not clone anything that had undesirable characteristics at this stage. Clones are from lateral branches, only one per plant. Plants additional lateral branches would be harvested later on if initial clone failed. Preserved 1-2 lateral branches for late cloning while lolipopping. If plants did not present a lateral branch for cloning, I did not take the top off (top is best indication of plant potential). If necessary would wait for reveg opportunity and pull plant at 7-8 weeks into flower if standout traits warranted further preservation. (not necessary in this project)

As culling progresses space opens up for plants to get bigger. Defoliating and lolipopping helps minimize plant mass and issues with humidity/temp. As I got far enough into flower for terpene profiles to be detected I began culling clones from clone domes in veg tent. Do not want to keep a single plant that is not outstanding, my initial goal is to narrow down to 10 (5% of population).

Plants harvested at 10-12 weeks of flower. 16 weeks total grow time from seed soak to final plant chop. Initially kept 12 cuts, 3 years later still running top 3.

Awesome write up! Great to see you got some keepers! Do you know what the genetics are? What characteristics did you look for and find in your keepers?

Picking strategy is does it compete, can I see myself getting rid of any of my regular rotation strains to replace it with this.

Specific traits that are top of mind;
High THC number, I know it sucks, but rec customers demand this and the number effects the sales price.
Decent yield, needs to make enough weight that it's profitable to grow commercially.
Bag appeal, low leaf to calyx ration, medium size rocks not big fluff, frost over hairs.
Terpene profile should be unique, if not better than the other version I have of a similar flavor it wouldn't make the cut (for example, I would never keep 2 lemon or 2 blueberry strains around).
All 3 of the plants I still run now fit these criteria.

Don't want to make this a plug for my seed hobby so not gonna be specific about the gear, but the keepers were variations of a few GMO crosses (was initially looking for hashers), both from fems and regs. Some of the notable non keepers were gelato crosses, all of which fell flat on their face.

:hump: that's a shit load of work few have the ambition for. I'm truly happy for you. Looks like you've finally found your diamond in the rough. Well deserved!!!
I'm flattered thank you. My keepers are all good versions of what they are, I wouldn't mind them sticking it out another year, but there are better things out there they will eventually lose out to. I don't see myself doing another big round like this any time soon, but I think to get the serious top tier cuts you may have to see 1,000 or more plants. From what the internet says GG4 was in a small group of phenos, so it's definitely possible to get legendary cuts from small batches, but I feel like the new elites coming out are getting pulled out of really big populations by commercial guys with resources. Exciting to see what comes next, either way, more seeds getting cracked now than ever!

I hate to say it but let the deep pocket guys produce the banger elite cuts. Keep yours around and outcross to their gene pool. It's unlikely you'll get their exact cut used for the crossing, but the genes are there to be explored, and you've got a solid foot already in the door. When you've got heat, you can always find the fire.
