If your plants are getting light evenly on all sides then you don't need to worry about it, if however their not then yes I would recommend rotating them once a day half way between lights on and lights off, so if your running 12/12 rotate 6hrs after lights on. As for light proximity to the plants you have to understand that lumens drop off the further away the light is, a 1000W HID becomes equivalent to a 400W HID at around 5ft from the bulb, so to answer your question yes, the closer you can get the light to the plants (without burning them of course) the bigger your buds will be.

5 gal pots are too much for that tent...the plant is going to out grow that space(depending on your veg time)..4x4x7...so 7height.....subtract 1ft to 1 1/2ft for light,hood/reflector....sudtract another 14-18inches because light has to be that far from top of plants...so you only have roughly 5ft of "grow height"....you'll have much better results doing 6-7 in 3gal...with a 2-3 wk veg...i have a 5x5x7...and here's a few pics of my past grows in the tent in 3gal pots

and still i wouldnt do it that way...not any more that is....IMO..there's a much better way to get twice as much.. if u were to do..say... 6 plants in 3gal pots..and a veg..you're looking at 10-14 wks total veg&flower time...and all you're gonna have is 6 main kolas and a bunch of popcorn buds...that little light wont get deep enough to grow anything else...that's too much time and PG&E for that amount of bud...i'd grow 12 in 1gal pots no veg, straight 12/12 and plan for 12 main kolas..and sum nice nugs...but good luck to whatever you decide...i currently have 42 afgoo in 1 gals straight 12/12 in my 5x5x7 with a 1000w HPS...doing exactly what i just suggested to you..

Regarding the footprint of a 400w lamp, there are some calculations to keep in mind - particularly lumens/sq ft. The sun is approx 10,000 lumens per sq ft, so that's what would be considered optimal. You can do ok with as low as 5000 lumens per sq ft, but it's not optimal.
A 400w hps produces approx 50,000 lumens. To get optimal lighting (10,000 lumens/sq ft) you could only light 5 sq feet, which is 2.5 feet x 2 feet. If you go with minimal lighting (@ 5000 lumens/ sq ft) you could cover 10 sq ft, which is just slightly over 3' x 3' -- and again that's minimal lighting. Hopefully now you can understand why a 4x4 is too much space for a 400w.

Ok pics are up i figured a solution i need to raise the plants and lower the lights.raising the plants will allow my light to stay high in my tent and light can shine bright all over my plants.Anyone have any comments onmy plants my first grow and they also hermed on me but i pulled as many as the balls as i could buds are looking pretty nice this pic was about a month ago.

put simply...is it "ideal?"..no...will it grow...yes...but as i said...only tops....side and under growth will suffer...so why allow the plants to grow them(side&under growth)?
