4x4x6 Grow Cab SketchUp for scrog grow

This is the idea Ive come up with through Google SketchUp for my first scrog grow. The cab is actually built in the basement, just need to hang light, fan, ducting etc. just figured I'd share with everyone considering more of you have helped me without even knowing it! Oh, its nearly exactly to scale lol. If anyone has suggestions, I'd love it! Keep in mind that the back(barely), sides, and top(barely) have any room to work with. I will not be using a filter yet, maybe not at all. Smell isnt really a big deal to me.

I know some of you say to have the fan push or pull air over the light...i honestly have no idea...so thats where it landed (in pic)

It will vent into another room via above ceiling.

Also, 6" passive intakes in bottom right front of cab.

400w hps, 6" air cooled reflector
hydrofarm 6" 400cfm vortex blower fan
45w air pump
(2) 5-gal dwc bucket SCROG

Here's a few pics from yesterday of the actual cab. Even made a work bench! lol :grin: It will also be painted flat white.

No, it's sucking through the filter, pushing air across the light and out through the back ducting, up and into another room. It's sucking FRESH/COOL air from the passive intakes lower front right
 
Looks good!!! The way you have your fan set up is the same as mine. The only thing i can recommend are getting some covers for the holes you plan to have as passive intakes so light doesnt get in or out.

You can get some kind of netting or fabric that allows air through like the sock/sleeve on carbon filters? spray paint it black and it should keep most light out/in.
 
Ya I will def be covering those just as you said. I can also construct a light trap box or just use some more ducting and make an 'S' to trap light. I just don't wanna restrict airflow as I'm trying not to buy another fan lol. So how are your temps w this set up? I was thinking of spray foaming all the joints too. Now i gotta attach the roof, hang light, ducting and build pvc scrog net. Ill post pics of progress tomorrow. Thanks for your input!
 
well my set up is slightly different but very similar.

4x4x6.5 grow tent

600 watt digital w/cooltube

400+cfm fan w/carbon filter

one or 2 more fans providing air across the leaves.

i also dont use hydro

but my temps are between 60-75 degrees. 80 when it gets warm out since my AC isnt currently in during the winter.

but during the spring/summer i run constant 75 plus or minus a degree haha

The fan alone pulls enough air across the light to keep it cool and i run a 600 which is about twice as hot as a 400 (not actual just guess since i have a 400 for my veg)

So youll definitely be good with that.

when it comes to light traps they seem to take up more spacethan theyre worth but its all good haha
 
also foam in the joints isnt necessary. a little over kill and that stuff is more messy than itll be worth it.

some gorilla tape would do a better and cleaner job.
 
Thanks for all the assurance and advice. And ya, I didn't mention everything I planned on doing. I will have a fan or two to just move air around the plants too. Ballast and air pump will all be on outside of cab. I've been keeping track of highs and low temps of basement and I'm ranging from 53-64F so I should be good there. So just the stocking material painted black is enough to trap light? Sorry for the stupid little questions. I'm just on the brink of finishing this cab and jonesin to start it up! Lol
 
No problem thats what im here for. And those temps are good for now but if theres no way youre cooling you might run into problems.

You shouldnt but i dont know the size of the basement and whats making it cold and what not.

I assume that should stop the majority of the light. if it doesnt get rid of all a simple light trap, piece of wood on a slant should kill the rest.

If light coming out isnt such a big deal than you should be fine with just the black material.

Any amount of light getting in shouldnt be enough to offset the growing schedule.
 
Ya light escaping isn't a big deal to me so that's good to know. I thought any amount of light leaking IN during dark period could mess things up. Living in the northeast keeps basement cool :blsmoke:

so I've got some beans comin in soon (fingers crossed). Any luck w any of these?

Looks great man! I used sketchup to do mine too. It's nice to be able to get a clean picture of what it's going to look like before you build.

Also looks like you used the same plant model :P
 
ya it def is nice knowing what we grow, rather than taking some guy off the streets word for it. but ya, sketchup is great and easy! really brings your ideas to life.

Well its strain dependent usually if you have a good strong strain that doesnt hermi easily they can handle small amount of light in the dark.

Unless the light is coming from another HID or is in large quantities for extended periods of time you should be good.

So if you have 2 or 3 other cfls in the room with your box and they arent over 13-26 watts and arent left on for long periods of time youre golden.

I Remember when i was growin outside these people next door had a street light in the middle of their yards (bad neighbor hood + big yards)

And i was always worried it would fuck up the flowering but it never did. It was about 30-40 feet away from it so there was light getting to the plant just not enough to significantly change the flowering of it.

Also those strains sound nice!

Are you going to clone and get a single strain??
 
Well I was just plannin on germing seeds under a humidity dome and then transfer to netpot and let them do their things. Do you suggest I should clone? And would it req another cab?
 
Thats all good if you want to grow multiple strains which is always fun. I personally go for max yeild and consistency.

It would need another cab but you could make a much smaller one or even a tent to hold clones and mothers once you find a single strain. If thats how you want to grow.

If you want maximum yeild it will help to single out a strain. It also helps out because instead of buying seeds for over $10 a piece plus shipping and waiting you buy a pack of rockwool cubes or rapid rooters for $20 and youve got enough for 50 clones.

Either way youve got a good set up so far and should just run with what you want to do.

Because youre the one smoking it in the end. :weed:
 
your 400 cfm fan will require the fresh air supply opening to be 10 inch round , or 10x10 sq, you can either just go buy a 10'' elbow set in rite in the cab on outside wall on the floor then add like 3 ft of 10'' straight pipe to the other side of the elbow( outside cab ) so light does not transfer ,or you could just build like a 12''x12''x3ft box on side of one of the cab on the floor same effect as the round pipe, keep the fresh air on the ground and slap a air filter over the opening outside the cab, air is always colder from the floor. Like the real duct work on your sketch, Not that flex crap. that fan is really big you are using and you will be moving the air really fast so make sure your basement has enough fresh air comming in from some point.if you do this you will have zero problems and most likly you dont even nedd to move air throuh your lite ,maybe just a small fan 60 cfm set at the same height as your bulb pushing the air toward your exhaust
 
Ya I wanna try diff strains at first then I eventually wanna go w the mother route. I'm def hoping this fan will take care of business! In the spot I have the passive intakes, I have two 6x6 squares open that I will prob just fab a box or some ducting to prevent light leaks. Gonna paint and hang the light tomorrow. Then build the DWC's and mount air pump. Time to tie up loose ends!!! And my beans arrived today (at my friends)!!! So I will get them tomorrow as well! Then I just gotta run a dedicated circuit over for all my devices.
 
Oh and one more thing, do you guys agree to have the fan PUSHING air over the light? Like I said, no filter in use so like the pic showed... Fan>light>duct>flange/out. And should I use duct between light and fan? Thanks guys!
