4x4 tent. 400w.. How many plants is good?

You can fit a lot of plants in a 4x4 successfully and with little to no humidity issues, if you use the correct ventilation.

Many growers do the same thing, even really packed SOG's... my advice was given on the basis that you appeared to be a newbie and in most cases, newbies have issues with ventilation in the beginning... so less plants may be easier to get your 'feet wet' and still yield well but without any humidity issues or problems that you may not be able to identify with so many plants

Start with a few, add more if you wish as you grow, learn as you grow

you could lollipop them and grow 48 1/2 oz colas.... I reall still would suggest keeping in the 3x3 and giving them some wiggle room but really what is your goal personal or production??? I like 1 big plant under a 400w rather than a bunch of little ones. laws in your state may help dictate how many to grow, if personal I would go with fewer bigger plants...
