400watt on sprouts?

I have sprouts under a 400watt hps right now there is no cooling tube, but I do have a fan blowing on the light and another one just throughout the area. Currently the light is about 2.5 feet above the newly sprouted babies. It's not to hot in the area but I'm just wondering should I lower the light and if so how much? I have already fried a couple of bagseed sprouts and not really willing to take the chance this time with NL. I am trying to avoid stretching but I figured I would leave it higher until i get like 4-5 nodes then bring it down... to about a foot away? any help or better idea's appreciated. Or just let me know if I'm doing the right thing, I'm slightly concerned (first grow)

Don't lower it. If anything, raise it a foot or so. Seedlings don't respond well to that much light intensity. Wait until it has a few sets of leaves and then lower it. Do the hand test to gauge your distance.

Ok, it's been more than a day and they seem to be doing fine. One of them does seems to be stretching a little bit but not to bad. They are both in 16 oz plastic cups how long should I wait before transplanting them. The second leaves haven't come out all the way.

stetching can be caused by the lights being too close(to hot).
move the light higher for now.you should not have to transplant for 2/3 weeks(about 4/5 inch tall).

light is a food source for plants as long as temps are good you can have your 400 within 8 inches to a foot from your seedlings

thanks, im not too upset its only bad seed.. a couple look like they may make it and one came up while the other were burning so that one is perfect still

alright..what kind of fan are you using for you hood???do you think a inline duct fan for 25 dollars will be able to cool a aircooled reflector???also do you have your fan pulling or pushing air out of the hood???

i got this one
High Tech Garden Supply

it is set up to pull and is located about 3 feet behind the reflector
it pulls air from out side the room through about 10' of duct where it goes to a T and one tube is on the table and the other is connected to the front of the light]

like i said the temp in there is only 78 degrees... i think it was just too much light ..too close for them

thats the same fan i was talkin about..can you post pics of how you got it set up..i plan on getting that this tuesday and i want to be able to hook it up right, also i was thinking about getting that euro reflector at htgsupply..it looks like the one you have just a little cheaper

This is my set up for starting my plants from seed. The whole thing was under $125 US. I used the adjustable shelf bracket/wall-mount so that it can be raised in tiny increments.

I start them in 1 qt paint buckets (.70 cents each @ Home Depot) and start them under 4 T-12 Floros. The 4 bulb fixture was $40, and I had to cobble together the bracket.
I will grow them here until they are well established, around 3 or 4 weeks. Then I will transplant them into their permanent 5 gal bucket homes and put them under the HID lights.
I tried to do the 400w MH thing but got about as far as you did. This works out really well. I started 24 seeds, and will pare them down to a final count of 10 big healthy females.

Ya know, for a weed, these babies are FINICKY about alot of shit. They are more delicate than one would think. Kinda makes you wonder how they made it in the wild.

Thanks i think i got things sorted out not they are under my hps and it's about 2.5' above and they seem to be more than happy :D. I bet they grew better in the wild simply because they have bread by humans for so long i can garantee you what we are grow and smoke does look grow or smoke all that much like what the indians had. After all corn used to be little bean pod looking things not much bigger than a quarter we got our hands on them, and now we got some nice juicy cola's :). I no longer can grow in the wild. kind of shame (the weed anyways).
