400watt MH/HPS in 3x3x7 63 cu

A buddy of mine bought a tent and wants to start growing. He bought the 400 watt mh hps setup no cool tube or anything.

Was wondering since I have not used a 3x3x7 with a 400 watt.

What could he do about ventilation. Never used a 400 watt bulb so I do not know how much heat they put off.

What inline would he need to keep his tent relatively cool?

Would a 6" 250 cfm be enough to cool the tent or should he go with an 8" inline rated at 400 cfm with or without a controller.

Now I know that the tent is 63 cu feet and i usually go with double what the cu feet is but being as he is using a open wing reflector would a 6" 250 be enough? He was askin me and I dont know what to tell him.

Any thoughts or experience?

I would recommend getting more fan than you think you need and get a fan controller. The answer to your question also depends on where you are, warmer climates will need more ventilation etc. I have a 5x5 and got way more fan than I needed, it is nice to be able to fine tune it and it is way quieter when you turn down a large fan than running a small one full blast.

Edit: I picked up a valueline 6" 435cfm fan for less than $80 delivered from vminnovations.com (I don't work for them) and have been very happy with it.

That is what I was thinking as well. But don't want him to spend a whole lotta of cash then he doesnt need. But I do agree that larger is beeter as it can be tuned.

I will let him know and go with a 400+ cfm fan with controler

Thank you

A lot of variables friend.

1) what is the temperature of the room the tent will sit in?

Simple math is 3.14 x watts/tdiff (tdiff = temp rise in tent during lights on.

3.14 x 400 = 1256

1256/10 = 125.6cfm needed to keep a 10°F tdiff aka temp rise within the tent during lights on.But this doesn't account for pressure losses due to adding ducting (and any bends in ducting) or from a carbon filter.

I'd say get a 6" inline centrifugal rated for 400 to 440cfm.

So...what temp will the room the tent sits in and draws it's fresh air frpm going to be?

I can't believe the feds are even putting their resources into this. Are they trying to strong arm the states ? They should be sued and dragged into court and given a big headache somehow for doing what they're doing.

I have a 3x3x7 with a 600 watter. I have a 6 inch MTN fan with carbon filter. I'm using a non vented hood. this is all in the basement and I have no problems with temps, if anything there almost to low. LOL. so he should be golden with the 400 cfm. you didn't mention filter?

Ahh alright that gives me a little info. Because he is also growing in his basement I do believe. So I am guessing he should fine. We will have to see what the temps are after everything is set up and what we think we need. I think he was just going to go with the 400CFM with controller that was mentioned in a previous post.

I am curious to where this came from. lol

This will work just fine for that 3 x3 and save some money too. A 4" inline fan is loud and a 6" with out a speed controller will suck the tent sides in. I run this same set up in a 4x4 tent with a bat wing and a fan blowing on the bulb. In my 5 x 5 room (ridgid walls) I use a 6" duct fan on a 18" filter pushing thru 2 vented 600's and my temps stay around 80 in the winter. I can put my hand on the glass and not burn myself. I use to run a inline 6" 545 cfm fan in the 5x5 and that thing uses almost as many watts as the light and my temps were to cold. This would not work in the summer in the 5x5 but I don't run in the summer anyways. Have the sun for that. If you purchase this set up you need to switch or turn the fan mounts around to pull thru your filter. You just unscrew the 3 screws and flip the fan over.http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-x-14-Carbon-Air-Filter-Pro-Combo-6-Inch-Duct-Fan-Exhaust-F019-/271264104697?pt=US_Hydroponics&hash=item3f2899c0f9

Thank you for the info man. I will turn him onto the listing on FeeBay. I may buy one of those myself as I currently do not have a scrubber. Not bad for 91 bucks.

And you know what I found works great if you need to dump temp in a tent. Well what I use anyways. A rainbow Vacuum. Also some of the smell filters threw the water. Kinda figured that out on accident. But you can drop temps in your tent within minutes depending on the size of your tent if needed. Was thinking about getting a rainmaker to place within the grow area to filter out some extra odor and clean the air a bit. plus it doubles as a fan. But the plus side is it does not remove Co2 from the air only containments. Just a thought as I have a few rainmakers around the house.
