400 Watt hps would be fine for 5 plants but you would prob have to keep em in 2 gal containers are so, maybe 3 gal. It would be tight but you could do that. And I agree a 600 would be better, but then again so would a 1000. You asked about the 400 and I would say yes, go for it.

Ok. 600 watt HPS on a mover. 435 cfm exhaust, passive intake. Roughly 25-35 grams per plant per gallon bag w/ 1 weekveg time after cloning. mother room/closet 2x2x7. Fox Farm nutes, Aaahmmmmmm, what else? I run 3 stages in my sog, though in the pic I grew out quite a room full for a mother for the outdoor 09'. Take clones every 3 weeks.

To put things in perspective for you. I set up a small closet grow for a friend wit hmy old 400HPS. From seed to harvest 90 days. 3, 2 ft females at 2 zips a pop. It was their first at it. A great first at that. They could have fit 5-6 in the same closet.

Perpetual grow, my aspiration. I'm unhappy with being limited to specific times to grow, but thats the way it is.
Again, nice !
