this is what I got to work with, so far ive got most of the inside covered in mylar.

I just gotta cut holes for the ventilation system which costist of a coupe 4 in desk fans, and there will be another fan inside to keep air moving.

also u think this set up will be to hot? the 400 has a built in ballast so ive been thinking it might be a problem any input welcome
 
I have a 400w with a built in ballast in a closet that is 2' x 3' and 6 feet high and I had to get a bigger fan to keep it cool. I believe you have the same one I do and it is rated for a 3'x3' space without getting too hot.
 
You will likely need a 6" inline or mixvent fan exhausting air through a carbon filter to keep the smell down and the cabinet cool, something in the 300-400cfm range at the least. 4" desk fans aren't going to cut it.

Even if the ballast was outside the cabinet, and the 400W HPS had a cooltube with a dedicated exhaust fan the cabinet would still need a decent inline/mixvent exhaust fan to stay under 100F.

Before lining the thing with mylar it'd be a good idea to caulk all the joints that don't move to keep the thing relatively light-tight and air-tight so intake air is only pulled in through your intake hole(s) and not every little crack. Also use some sort of filter on the intake so dust & junk isn't being pulled into the cabinet.

thanks for the input...Ive gotta rethink my design a little. Dont have a day to work on it till friday either :/
And I have ac so I keep my apartment pretty cold and smells not really a problem cause its legal and my landlords cool with it.
 
Ive been running some tests with the cab today....with the ac on and none of the fans running its stays about 87, with the probe about a foot under the light. Working on a seed order now....just cant decied on a strain. Any one got suggestions on an easy to grow strain or 2?

Pretty much finished. Just gotta fix light leaks from the front which doesnt matter for like another month. I have an ace of spades bag seed gremming, currently working on trying to find clones or seeds....didnt think itd be so hard in medical state where im legal.
 
looks like a great start man, I'd go ahead and second the extraction/filter maybe even a 4inch will suffice given your running temps, but remember the temp will change
when stuffed w/plant matter too.
 
Don't forget to watch your water temps if you're doing hydro. Also, I recommend ( probably more in the future ) an Arduino setup to monitor temps, humidity, light, etc. That way you reduce your interaction with the plants to a minimal.

my one little seedling that just sprouted today....hope its a girl
got another seed germming atm. I definatly still have work to do on the cab to...light leaks like no other and still need to upgrade venting and air circulation, neither a problem for vegging but soon it will need to be fixed.

Still no signs of life from other beans, its been 2 days and it hasnt sprouted
