Okay, I got a 400w hps light and I want to use it for vegging and flowering. Yes I know I should get a mh for vegging but I'm useing what I have right now. My question is, can I put the 400w hps on the sprouts or should I maybe go but some cfls for the first few days after they pop up and then put the hps on them???

Thanks everyone for all the help and happy growing to everyone.

Ablazed...you can get a Dual spectrum bulb for your hps which will give your light more of the blue spectrum which will see you through veging only costs about £20 new as well or ebay have some cheaper ones going.

I started mine under my hps even before they had shown... Then when they did I had it about 3-4ft above the tops of the plants then moved it down over a week or so to with in 1ft of the plants.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I would get something like a Dual spectrum bulb but I don't have the money and thats why I don't have a mh for vegging in the first place. So what you are saying is I can use the 400w hps for the little sprouts but just make sure the bulb is far away. 3-4ft ??? Thanks.

you can put a MH bulb in a HPS fixture, just not the other way around, conversion bulbs are a scam.

How do you know you can put a MH bulb in a HPS fixture. Everytime I ask someone if I can do this they tell me to not be so dam dumb and that it will burn my house down.

there are conversion MH bubles around that can be started with an HPS blast, also are there all season bulbs for HPS which are more in the blue spec then normal HPS. Phillis, Osram, Tesla and Sylvania make HPS that are only for grow too, sylvania is the cheapest brand for those.

i personally got a Philips Son T Agro 400W all season bulb for my fixture but i grow with Sylvania during flower and use cfls for veg:)

no, don't try this, the sprouts gone stretch sky high and snap and die on you:cry:

get a few cheap floros or even cheaper a few cfls in 6000-6500K range, that is blue/cool light range and veg with them, i use those too.
also you don't have to grow them 3-5ft tall in veg, the will double their size during flower anyway!!!
a single foot is more then enough for veg, rather top and tie them down so they get nice and bushy. so you create more higher spots for top buds;)

I sprout my seeds and clones under cfls. The same cfls I veg under. Then I move them to the closet with the 400w HPS to flower and finish. This works for me.I'am building a cab 6' 3" tall by 4' 2" wide by 2' 3"deep,Just not alot time to work on it .I'll post it when I finish it and start a grow, with pixs. peace
