400w HPS Question

I been doing alot of reading and watching videos of grows involving 400w HPS. I am going to be constructing a closet set up next month and instead of CFLs I have decided to try for 400w HPS.

My question is how hot do these bulbs get? Should I get a self cooling one?

or would just one like this work?

I plan on putting it in a grow tent with a powerful inline booster fan exhaust and a osculating 3 speed fan in the tent aswell as another powerful but not yet specified intake fan. So I plan on having total air control and circulation. I am just paranoid about fire hazards and I dont know much about how hot or safe those 400w lights are. Anyone out there care to educate me a little?

O yea id like to add that im going to be growing probably in a 5x4x2 grow tent... maybe something a little larger. which will sit in my closet


After abit of research and talking to some people in the chat room I found out about Cooling tube reflectors and how they cool the light. I just hook up a booster fan to the back of the light to exhaust the hot air away from the light. Now would this single booster fan be all i need for exhaust in a set up this size? I plan on throwing a carbon filter on the back of it aswell....

I use a 400 watt HPS w/ a cooled hood, i pull the air w/ a 4 inch inline fan. I put a thermometer 2 inches under the hood and it stays around 78-82 degrees when the light is on

Right now its cool temp here so i dont run any other exhaust, once summer temps hit I'll be running an exhaust.

i run a 400watt setup right now its a MH bulb an at first it got rele hot, im not running a cool hood but i have a 4 inch inline fan 170 cfm next to it with the exhaust duct sucking air from under the hood, i wish i got the cool hood, but i am able to conrol teps without it using the exhaust fan an reg fans which i feel is a priority no matter what you use to grow, if you have the extra cah get the cool hood even if you dont have a fan yet.. some u can remove the glass.. idk what im getting to but you get th point.. def for a tent thats going to be closed all the time.. its worth it man, i still want to upgrade my hood... hope everything works out for ya.. def if it gets hot an humid in your area good luck

Sweet thank you for the information. I will definitely be getting a 400w with the cool tube. Should I get one with the removable tempered glass or not?

yes you want the glass, it seals the heat into a chamber making it easier to exhaust

Hey everyone, I use a 400w HPS right now in flowering.. the thing is there is a black (burn like) resedue inside the bulb which the guy at my gardening store told me was due to it being old.
-what i was wondering is if using this "older" HPS will effect my total yield at all. I dont have the $80.00 right now for a new bulb or I would just get one but I am about 3 weeks into flowering and my LS seems to be doing great! i just dont want to loose out in the long run. any info would be greatly appreciated.
