400w HPS/MH First closet grow!

Hey guys, I had a topic running in Grow Room Design, but I figured if I'm going to be adding to this frequently I might as well put it here!

So I have a cooltubed 400w MH (right now for veg), running to a 4" vortex fan up top and then out. Just doing a couple bagseed right now for a test run, if things go well, i have a bag of 10 AK48 I wouldnt mind trying out :hump:

The first couple photos are from Day 1, I hadn't gotten my tarp zipper in the mail yet, so it was just velcroed for the time being. Just put the zipper on today, seems to be working okay so far! A little bit of light leaks through the zipper, is that going to give me issues come flowering?

The plants are running 24/7 right now, temps have been good, sticking around 25 C. I've been holding myself back from watering too much, do they look healthy? The one is on day 5, the other is on day 3. I know Im missing a passive intake on the bottom, trying to find a way to make it light proof before I go ahead and cut the hole!

Any comments/critiques would be more than welcome! Hopefully we see some dank nugs :joint:

Ended up getting through the transplant seemingly well, the girls are growing like crazy now. Its day 14 for the bigger one, day 12 for the other.

About a week ago I noticed the first set of fan leaves were turning brown and looked to be drying up. I THINK the issue was they were too close to the light, i dropped the plants down, and now the leaves above all seem to be healthy... does it look like heat burn to you guys? I havent started with nutes yet because of this whole deal, but will probably start very soon. Ive also checked my PH and it's hovering around 6. Comments/Advice appreciated..

3 weeks in, plants seem to be healthy, but I would love a second opinion! I've started nutes, just using a basic 20-20-20, and I've just been adding a pinch to the distilled water I'm using! Theres one leaf that seems to have a mark on it, not sure if its nute burn or just normal?

Also started LST on both plants, they seem to be reacting well! Starting to get a pretty noticeable smell, thank god my carbon filter arrives in the next couple days!

Your plants are looking really good! Nice-n-healthy if you ask me. I'll be interested to see how this strain grows! As for the small mark on the plant, I wouldn't worry. :hump:

i got seedlings hitting my humidity dome, time to put em on my 400w MHhps conversion...how far was ur MH up when they were just 3 inch or so seedlings? Also what cfm do u recommend for cooling, this thing is running hot as fuck and im trying to keep my area under 90 and I'm having trouble.

Thanks for the reassurance freakforsale!

And kush, Ive honestly had my light 2-3 feet above my plants and it seems I haven't had any issues with stretching or anything. Ive got a 4" 175 CFM vortex pumping air, its pretty loud, not the fan, just the air movement, but it seems to be doing the trick, the hot air just empties into a bedroom I have off limits, mixes with my AC, and I've been able to keep temperatures around 25 C. When I leave the AC off for a while it can get up to 30 C, but the fan does a pretty damn good job, id recommend it! I'm no expert though! :joint: I could see it getting pretty damn hot in there if you didn't have central air or an air conditioner in the room!

Day 27

Got my carbon filter up and running, and have to say it works perfectly. There used to be a very faint weed smell in the room, but now theres nothing at all. Definitely worth the 60 bucks I spent to buy it, I don't trust myself with DIY when it comes to important stuff like this :D. Just ending up sticking it on the end since I didnt really have any room in my cab to put the bigass thing! What bungee's and duct tape won't do..

Also transplanted the bigger gal into her final resting place, it didnt say a gallon amount, but it was a 14" pot, anybody have a guesstimate on how much it is? Hopefully I won't need to go any bigger, I only plan to do 3-4' plants. I'm leaving the other gal in the smaller pot for a couple more days to give it a little more root!

Also, should I be looking at switching to flower soon? I was thinking in about a week, I still have about 4' of clearance above the plants. I've also been keeping an eye out for sex to show, but nothing seems too clear yet (I'll try to get a better picture of between nodes.. but it kind of looks like a sack i guess...)

My first genuine tip would be do ditch the bagseed and get something decent to start with.. I know it can seem to make sense with regards to budgets etc but the real truth is that the seed is 80% going to dictate your grow and any measurements you do over the course of a long 3.5 months will not probably transfer over to top genetics.

If the grow turns out okay but not very strong or not very good vigour or suffers from pests or fungus easily how do you know it is the environment or crap seeds?

Take the costs on the chin I say first grow. If you want 3 plants sew 5 female seeds in-case you do something stupid like tread on one which is actually more common to seems to many newer grows than actual grow issues :-)

Don't want to start of negative. just my two cents and will be here to help either way.

Best way to measure your pot is to fill it with water ;-)

4 inch clearance only? Of course we do not know the strain but they will almost certainly want to double in size once into flowering

Definitely agreed, I wasn't so much worried about specific details (if this works out, in future grows I will), I was more just concerned if I could get a decent plant going period heh. Ive done quite a bit of research and reading, bought relatively good equipment, and just wanted to see what it could do first :) I dont really trust myself with 5+ plants yet, with time I guess! I just pray that they're both females and everything will work out for the best, but if it turns out differently I won't be too destroyed inside ;)

Hopefully my next journal will be 5 AK-48's, they're waiting on deck!

Also I think I put 4 feet of clearance, that should clear that up :)

man that is male for sure... really healthy looking though! i admire you going with the bagseed for a trial run... i think one can learn alot from the variables that come along with growing bagseed, butgood genetics is always the best. did you ever light proof your zipper i was thinking a flap that covers the inside of the zipper would help...

thanks pkp, he's in the trash :( . Yeah the zipper just lets out waaay to much light.. I was thinking either making a flap out of duct tape folded in half or just some painters poly. Got lazy, was going to worry about it when flower time comes ;)

Put the second plant in a 3 gallon pot now, so just hoping it turns out female, if not, looks like I'll be starting AK-48's early :hump:

Thanks for the confirm!

deffinitely... i have experience but am new too this site. I have gone off bagseed like you, and have never had anything to exciting to post on hear. trying to do something serios tho cant choose between lemon skunk or white rhino right now.. ill let you know when my thread is up to date... i was thinking about this the other day... if you use passive vents to maintain a negative pressure in your tent you can force the sides to be sucked in tight around your frame... or learn basic indian tent making and see how they did it.... ha ha. peace

Definitely a gal, has a bunch of pistils coming in! We're at a month today. I've been keeping at the LST, and now my side branches are getting pretty tall, should I be tieing them down as well, along with the main stem? I was thinking about giving it another 2 weeks of veg, would that be worth it? I've only got 1, so I'm going for maximum yield, i still have about 3 1/2 feet of clearance!

sweet man! from my experience i have tied down the top branches , and only one set of side branches. once your growth from tying down side branches catches up with the rest thats when i would flower, that will give you time to let it veg out real well, and then it will explode when you go to flower!

Decided to put her into flower today, I had heard that keeping the MH bulb going for a couple weeks reduces stretch, can anyone confirm? I'm going to stay with the MH bulb for now, guess it can't really hurt! I'm still using 20-20-20 ferts, will it make a HUGE difference or should I look into some blooming ferts? Appreciate all the advice guys its awesome :) I realize its just bagseed so I'll keep the updates to a minimum!IMG_0669.jpgIMG_0670.jpgIMG_0671.jpg

looks good blooming ferts will only help the plant bloom.. the ferts actually help stimulate the process...
