400w hps blew my outlet..anybody have this happen?

plugged my fuckin 400w hps in today and it blew the outlet along with half the power to my house...why the fuck did this happen? its kinda rediculous to think a outlet cant withstand 400 watts..and yes it was the only thing plugged in?? why is this happening??

The rest of the house that lost power must be on the same circuit, and the light overloaded the circuit.

Turn off, or unplug some of the appliances that went out when you used the light and try again.

Not to state the obvious.. but was it wired correctly? Sounds like a short. Did the breaker go back on when you unplugged the light & resent the breaker? If it pops when you plug the light in it has to be in the lights wiring.

I'm not an electrician.. But I COULD play one on T.V. :)

Could it be it was wired for 110 & plugged into a 220? Or vise versa?

A surge protector does nothing to stop you from overloading a circuit. It only protects from an over-voltage situation from the supply.

House circuits are typically wired for 15 or 20 amps load....it's always good to KNOW how many amps are being pulled by all devices in a circuit. BUT....if you only plugged in something you've been using previously, then it appears your light has a short..........

make an (electrical) map of your house so you know what is where as far as circuits and amp draws

okay here it goes...only oter shit on that circuit was my garage light, hallway light, kitchen light, refrigerator, oven and mircowave. I plugged it in ( came with a 120v cord, or i can buy the 240v cord and use that) so we plugged it in, spark from the outlet and loss all power from that circuit..runs on a 20amp fuse, electric did not return when we unplugged it, just threw a new 20amp fuse in the fuse box and the electric is back on...what the hell is going on?? is my ballast fried now?

DUDE your going to burn your house down! you need a dedicated circuit for your growing needs

yeah run a new breaker to be safe. if it was fine before u plugged in the light then thats ya prob i would replace the fixture.

Hey I had the same thing happen with my 1000W, I do not know much about electricity but I know I am drawing close to 15 amps from my grow room and have no idea what else in the house is on the same circut, How would installing another breaker work?? Just plug and play or do I need some more electrician experience than that?? Thanks in advance guys...

and how would I go about finding one?? Just search "20 amp breaker"??

You have to much on your circuit already pilgrim is right you need a dedicated circuit for grow room

how can i get a dedicated circuit? woudl this mean having an electrician come over and configure in a new circuit in the main breaker box??

does this light have an on/off switch? If not plug your light into a surge protector and use the switch on the surge protector to turn on and off your light. =)

a dedicated circuit is a new 20amp brecker or whatever size you need and a new electric line to your room,ive done this but advise you hire an electrician
