you need a ballast in order to use the bulbs. HID lighting is not like your typical light that you just plug in and go you will need at veery least a ballast and corisponding bulb and a mogul45 ( i believe) socket and cord, the cord from the socket will plug into the ballast and then the cord from the ballast wil plug into the wall.

heres a decent 400w kit and i personally like this brand as they offer a 3 year warranty on thier ballasts and 1 year on the bulbs, have had to deal with customer service already (due to a broken bulb upon arival) and they have been great.

that is the cleaper one that dosent include a cool tube if your growing in a tent or closet your going to want to pring the extra 20 bucks or so to get the kit that comes with a cool tube

oh shit sorry you said 4000 not 400.....lol

never used one but i would think 4x 1000w would be better or even 7x 600w as they are cooler and would probabally be able to cover more square footage than a suingle light

Am I understanding this correctly. That say a 1000w ballast can handle 5x200w bulbs. For some reason I thought it was always one bulb one ballast? So a 4kw ballast can handle 10x 400w or 4 x1000w?

No, unless the ballast is specifically designed to run more than one bulb it or the bulbs will likely fail if connected to multiple parallel bulbs. Generally speaking ballasts designed for such a purpose are technically just the guts of two ballasts stuck in one box.

Are you sure its a 4000w bulb and not 4000kelvin in colour?

Most common wattages are
250,400,600,1000
Most common kelvin spectrums are
10000,6400,5000,4000,2700,2100

All these are different colour spectrums.

You can get an awful lot of gear for $7500. One regret I have is not getting a larger number of smaller lights. I mean I wish I had 6 600's instead of 3 1000's.

lol only once have i read or heard anything about growing with a 4k. and apparently you gotta keep the shit like far as hell away from your plants or it'll bleach your plants white and puts off TONS of heat.
