The only reason they are so expensive right now is because the lack of research. They are going in the right direction of using better led's for this application. I could make a better procyon for around $150-$200 using Phillips Lumileds. All it is, is a massive aluminum heatsink with a fan blowing on it, with a bunch of high wattage leds attatched. These LED's can take so much more current than regular ones you see on EBAY, because they dissapate their heat directly out the bottom of them and into the heatsink. They are driven by a led driver circuit which controls the current for the led's. Hence the 25w overhead, for a total power consumption of 125w. Check out my grow log for our LED + CFL setup, our LED's alone are using around 70w, so we really aren't too far off from the Procyon, and maybe even surpass it by using superior LED's. I think my red led's im using produce around 140 lumens each(keep in mind this is targeting the exact wavelength needed, so around 3000lumens of pure red light).^^But they cost well over $600 and they
have not yet been tested with Cannabis...
which easily uses light differently than all
other plants. So while the Procyon might
work better than a 400w HID on MOST
plants... I personally think that it will work
no better than the setup being used in this
journal. It might work faster at growing...
for $600+ and only a coverage area of 4'x4'
it just doesn't add up yet. I stress "yet."
But the Procyon does look sound and will
get better very soon! I am sure of it.
I totally agree with you on everything,So all im trying to say is we just need more confirmation of the power of led's. After we finish our first grow, we will try experimenting with just our LED's. This will isolate the LED's from our noobishness of growing.
See, I saw someone else that made that statement on these forums, and it's simply not true. You can find leds all up in the range of 600-700nm, and including 660nm. Here is one quick place I found after a simple google search. They even have the original packaged leds really cheap on ebay at 660nm. Thy website that has the procyon sells 3w led's at 660nm on their site also. I really don't know where this NASA stuff came from....I totally agree with you on everything,
except for the "Pure Red" statement.
The Red Procyon LED are just as Spectrally
limited as the Red LED in this Grow. Science
just hasn't been able to hit 660nm Red yet.
All the LED grow lights that you see are rated
at 630nm or less. This is comes in at about 30-
40% of what Cannabis needs to bloom. 660nm
Red LED's exist, but they are around a $1000
per LED. It's the Red Wave length that NASA
uses in the Space Station and on Shuttles.
Soon... Science and Engineering will allow for
this difficult Spectrum to be produced cheaply,
but for now... It's just mad expensive.
On a side note... Very few HPS lights even get
close to 100% 660nm Red. Most are in the low
40% Photosynthetic Active Radiation. They just
push out so much power that it compensates
for the lack of the "True Red."
