32 Gallon Trash Can Stealth Idea/Design

Playing around with a trash can grow idea. Seeing as I use trash cans for reverse osmosis water storage itll blend in fine assuming I can prevent the typical suspects.General idea at this point is CFL's can be mounted/hung from the lid of the trash can and eventually set flush into it when the plant(s) are large enough. Got a few model pics of the basic model. Not going to start adding in ventilation ideas iv had etc until the first issue is settled, But we'll get to that in a minute.

First lets get to some specs/dimensions on the trash can itself and see where I ramble onto from there. The actual trash can is 1' 4" wide at the base (ID) and 1' 8" at the top (ID) The lid's concave goes from 2 ½" to 4 ½" at the apex. From bottom to rim it is 2' 3" (½?) so not a lot of height. Obviously ive already picked through a few strains and thought about how I plan on growing the plant to fit.

Now lets move onto soil, I dont see the point in growing in a trash can and sticking a pot in it.That said, Im debating between soil depths and I went ahead and used some tools for calculating tank volume to get some numbers to discuss. 4" Volume is 3.48 Gallons, 5" Volume is 4.35 Gallons, 6" Volume is 5.22 Gallons. Keep in mind these are approximate numbers because obviously the trash can just cant be perfectly cylindrical for ease. The actual volume I would estimate to be 6-8% more than those numbers.

Next issue is ventilation, Im planning on going the simple route at the moment and cutting 3 sides of a square out for a PC fan and using the 4th side as a axis for a flap to act as a light shade. I am worried about sound as well as the ability to attach some kind of carbon filter later. Dosent need to filter out all smell just the majority and the rest will be covered by various other plants etc. Also worried about sound because It will be going into a closet that sounds like your in a speaker basin when your inside it, So, That obviously has me concerned about how it sounds outside of it. Not many people come in my room and I rarely have guests to begin with however I already have a frag tank (Noisy details) with a skimmer and overflow in my room and it gets on my nerves since I love silence.

Thats about all I really want to get figured out right now. Planning on updating the 3d model and supplying up to date pics as I go. I want to get it completely planned out and modeled before I start because that will give me time to get all the little toys I want to play with and will help me avoid any unexpected surprises. (For the first time in my life :joint:)

On to the pictures. Pretty self explanatory, Lid line models got a side cut open and the various soil depths for a visual reference on how much room I would have left.

Okay heres a quick update with my idea on ventilation. I apparently didnt save the model so I just made a rough version that should suffice. soil depth in the model is 6" and I figure I can get at least 12 possibly 14 26W CFL's in the lid. Not only that but also have the ability to have the ventilation filtered somewhat later on but have it as the only way for air/light to get in/out. For the most part I think the plans fairly solid at this point. Debating between 1 plant or a 2 possibly 4 plant SoG. Feedback anyone?

Edit: Oops forgot my pic 0.o

This is an interesting idea, I'd like to see how it turns out. The only thing I'd be concerned with is heat, but you can always upgrade later if it's too hot. I run 16 cfl's in an open cabinet and it gets up to 90f with a clip fan blowing over them... had to upgrade my fan.

Nice to see some interest in the idea, The problem with people looking into my trash cans is theyd have to have a reason to A: Be in my room, B: Be in my closet, C: Looking into my water storage containers D: Still be alive after failing the first 2. That aside yes unless put into the right context it could be a very big issue. Created a very rough light model of a 26W in a socket to scale to play with and im going to have to go back to my original estimate (The one I of course didnt bother to post...Go figure.) of 10 CFL's in the lid. Obviously I can also paint the can but ultimately id prefer not to be spray painting a trash can for "no reason" if avoidable. Anyway quick pictures to show it off. It is yet again just half the design.

I am a bit worried about heat but I figure with the circular shape of the can if anything I may just need to add a small fan inside to help circulate the air and I should be fine. Of course if the temps in the closet itself become an issue because of the can I see no reason I cant have a fan blowing fresh air in. If someone comes over etc it should be able to run on the air in the closet for a few hours before heat becomes an issue. Not to mention i can always just "happen" to set a fan up blowing air out of the closet onto me at my desk also.

Ultimately im fairly sold on this idea its just going to take awhile to piece together. Right now I have the can 3 spare sockets and absolutely no money so I have a long way to go. Issue at hand in set up atm is how I can mount the sockets to the lid completely internally.

As always feedback and idea more than welcome.

Edit: Shit I forgot my pictures again -.-

Mount your light sockets to a board then mount that to your lid. Check out my sig for pics.

Issue even with that is mounting. My issue isnt room or anything its mounting without having anything coming out of the can or the lid like screws and shit. Im playing with an idea atm that might work but the pvc cement isnt wanting to react with the plastic the cans made of to bond anything.

Well I have mounting for the 8 lights around the rim figured out. Now I need to get the 2 hanging in the middle worked out.

i can vouch for the basic idea, there are the occasional trash can grow logs(not many)
i used the idea to custom build a trash can(kind of) from aluminum flashing, let me get the exact size i wanted
so it will work if setup properly

Yea I see no issues with the principals thus far and granted its fairly terrible for mass production but a daily smoke stock for one person as long as I conserve it should be plenty and easily manageable. Still got to do a few odds and ends like water deliver to the soil wiring prep etc but otherwise I think I got just about everything figured out. Now its just getting the bulbs extra sockets and finding some spare PC fans. Just tossed over 40 cases etc when I moved in here. Now im wishing I would have kept some lol.

vertical grow is where the lighting isn't at the top, mounted from bottom to top
so you could have fluorescent tubes in the center of the can
i've seen this done as vertical scrog, screen around lighting in the center, plants outside

Interesting indeed. Wish I could do that but this is kind of a basic set up for me to play with. Nothing really serious right now. Although I do wish I would have kept my old grow box and my HPS etc. Id be set right now.
