here are some pics of a plant that has been growing for 2 weeks, in a rubbermaid 18 gal tub, watering pump and lights were on a 20 on 4 off cycle, but last 2 days have been 18/6, have airstone in res on 24/7, just added some nutes yesterday, using the fox farm schedule but cut dose in half beings its the first dose of nutes, can anyone tell me what the problem is? using 2 cfl's at 65 watts a piece. 65watt--->300watt the box says....outputting 3900 lumens each bulb then it has 2 26 watt cfl's and all lights are 8" from top of plant

I can't make suggestions regarding hydro growing, but I will say that seedling shouldn't be getting FF anything at this point. The most I would give it is fish emulsion. The 65 watt is fine. Just don't keep it right on top of that seedling.
I just noted your saying it was 8" from...you can go a lot closer than that with cfls.

Change Res. She was to young for that strong of nutes. Just use ph'd water for a few days. then wait a week or so and then sum nute. say 1/4 strength or less

thanks for the reply bro! well after reading post #2 & #4 below, it seems i do need to change the res water, but maybe i wasnt clear enough, the plant was doing this before nutes were even put in.....i thought maybe puttin the nutes in would help it? and the only water i have available at the moment that isnt coming out of the sink is the extra water from 3 weeks ago from when i originally filled res that has just been siting in another tote with the lid on it? but its not gonna be enough to fill half the res, can i mix that water with tap water with no harm to plant?

Ive used tap water b4 but always let it sit for 24 hrs. 12 hrs with bubble stone pumpin air in it. Ive never started with seed for hydro. I always use clones and i start them out with FF big bloom. until they get strong root systems. Then I slowly introduce grow big.

i dunno my PH :-/ im a newbie, first time grow....whats the best place to get a PH tester, anything specific i need? temp is usually around 78 degrees F with lights on down to about 70 with lights off, res temps i dont really know excatly but i know i freeze two 32 ounce gatorade bottles every night and put them in one at a time during each lights on cycle. also i think i found my problem, in the res, the roots have this brown like slime on them, i sprayed the roots off with a spray bottle of clean water, seemed to make the roots look white and healthier again, have water sitting out to change res tomorrow.

you need to test your ph in hydro daily 5.8 is best can get ph testers at fish supply store, ebay, all over the net or ur local hydro shop. sounds like u have sum root rot startin. get that under control or its dead 4 sure. buy hydrozyme or use h2o2.

Nute burn for sure. Liquid Karma, Big Bloom or some light organic is all they need for now. Along with a bit of root stimulator. If they are only bagseed you may just want to start over. I am not saying you couldnt save these and learn a bunch. But with only 2 weeks invested starting over may make for a less stressful grow. And your bulbs are fine. Just need to be closer, 2-3 inches from the tops. The 3900 lumens is right at the bulb surface. 8 inches away and that probaly drops to around a 1000 or less. Just a guess but bet I am pretty close.

If I was you I would learn from this one. But if you dont have feminized seed then it could be a male and that would really suck cause its your only plant. If you have more more chances for females. Wont hurt to start a few more. You could always start them in dirt and then switch them to hydro once you get the hang of things.

You all have been a HUGE help! I CANT THANK YOU GUYS ENOUGH! res water changed, moved lights to about 4 inches away....only those two leafs showed in picture are still yellowing and dying more, should i clip them off? and i noticed yesterday the second node the very tip of the leaf was starting to turn yellow, and today its back to a greenish....so i guess the root spray helped this baby out, now she got fresh water, well see what happends will come back later with more pics, also should the lid to my res be lined with something to help keep more light out or even reflect heat?

Yeah your res should be light proof

You can actually come closer than 4" with the cfls. If you are vegetating that one seedling alone, I feel it is a waste of energy to use close to 200 watts. Take into consideration, I tend to veg seedlings with combination of cfls and natural indirect sunlight.
If the yellowed leave has reverted back to green healthy tissue, obviously leave it alone.
The completely yellowed leaves that are dying, go for it...clip them. This will encourage branching. However, I suggest not doing again until they are at least 3 weeks old....and keep on a steady regimen of 18/6 lights while vegetating.
Again, I do not grow hydroponically, but I would suggest a white background for the base, not mylar or aluminum foil. I've personally tested both and white is most efficient with reflecting light and delivering less heat.

sorry i was out of town yesterday, thank you for the reply, so your saying just like a piece of white like cardboard would be ok....almost like construction paper but a little thicker? also the yellowing leaf like is half dead but seems the end of the leaf closed to stem hasnt turned yellow like the rest of the leaf, should i just clip it anyways beings about 3/4 of the leaf is yellow n dead? and are you saying i have too much light for the one plant? i was under the assumption u can never really have too much light?
