Hello!

Currently running FFHF no amendments or anything. I started FF trio at flower and followed the schedule at 1/2 of recommended and these plants did well on growth and everything however I know I can do better or add/subtract/change something here to get better weed... I can probably do better on the soil composition as well.

Any recommendations?

Sounds like your first grow went well, you want better quality then it starts with better genetics.

I’ve tried lots of amendments with various grow medium/super soils over the years.
Unless you’re using the same soil over multiple harvests, a good soil mix should have enough nutrients for most if, not all of a grow cycle,
I’m a big fan of keeping it simple. Do a 1/2 soil 1/2 compost or 2/3 soil 1/3 compost mix. Top dress with compost and water to fertilize as needed.
Less compost = better drainage
More compost = for bigger feeding plants

Two mixes I’ve had success with are:

vermont compost company:
Fort vee 2/3
Compost Plus 1/3

Fort vee 1/2
Compost plus 1/2

Pro mix 2/3
Compost plus 1/3

pro mix 1/2
Compost plus 1/2

My last/current grow I tried the 4 mixes above. They all worked well for me, I top dressed compost a couple weeks into 12/12 on the plants that looked like they needed nutrients.

I used to try to push plants to take up tons of nutrients and try to up yields with dry amendments, liquid fertilizer, foliage feeding, etc.
This year I tried the less is more approach- a buddy of mine pulled 1 lb in a 4x4 with 2x 200w boards and only soil- the mix was 2/3 ft vee 1/3 compost plus. I tried that mix and the other variants above and have some of the healthiest plants I’ve grown in 20+ years.

I was an avid user of FFOF soil for YEARS. After Covid I felt like the quality of it went down but that’s just my opinion. I will still use FFOF for my clones in solo cups but that’s it and only because it always tended to be a “hotter” soil so I can just water my clones without messing with nutes for a bit. For my larger plants in veg/flower I have since been using Roots Organics 707 soil and love it.

The first nutes I ever worked with was FF and there really wasn’t anything wrong with them they got the job done. For years after I was using General Hydroponics FloraNova and their other additives and grew some of my best tree with those nutes. I am now using House and Garden and love them just as much if not more than the GH but would still use GH any day of the week.

As someone else stated above use better genetics. I’ve grown plenty of autos but at the end of the day photos are far superior in just about every aspect there is to think about. That said I still play around with them here and there, but strictly just for the fun of it and love of growing anything although I do not and will not take up unnecessary indoor space on them if I have other projects going on. Good luck and happy growing!

If you grew healthy happy plants to harvest your first time, congratulations! Now you wanna improve the quality? The easy trick can be used by 99% of first growers to improve their harvest. I was waiting for my trademark to come in but I'll share early to you guys... "2 more weeks". Seriously I picked early my first few grows and the best things to improve quality and yield is to let the buds finish. Whenever you think it's finished let it go another 10-14 days. Unless maybe your plant is dying a slow death, the bud will only ever get better in those last couple weeks

This is good and bad advice. I would have to say that rule of thumb would be extremely dependent on when the person thought it was done and could end up with way over ripened plants unless that’s the goal. Most plants finish in the 60-70 day area but you will get some strains/phenos that can and will go beyond that 70 day mark. Best advice is to buy a proper scope and around 60 days start checking the trichomes. More clear = more heady and racy. Mostly cloudy= prime. The more amber= getting past its peak and more couch lock like.

I'd say the best things you can do for better weed would be;
Good genetics,
Good environment/keep her happy,
Don't harvest too early,
Dry/cure properly
Basically unless it's totally shit genetics, which I've only ran into a couple times ever, it's all on you.
