2nd Grow, Haze and NYC Diesel, Bubbleponics

Hey there, this is my second official grow, official meaning I'm willing to post because of good results :-P. I've been on and off messing around in my room for the last year and a half and had a succesful grow two years back which can be found here:

https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/68918-1st-grow-multiple-strains-bubbleponics.html

I've fixed up the room and re-adapted the strategy. I have two mini tents for two future mothers. I was given a mid-sized plant of Blueberry Kush in december and have her growing in a dirt bucket as one of my mothers. My other (to be) mother is a NYC Diesel feminized seed I just dropped into my DWC bucket on the left side of the back of the tent. The blueberry kush is on the back right, the with multiple plants on the right is mostly NYC diesel feminized, and the plants on the left side are haze feminized seeds.

This grow I am doing seeds because my mothers aren't of sufficient enough size that I want to start taking clones yet. I have 5 plants in each bubbleponics because I had two seeds not work out so I just tugged them as it makes the tube more accesible for ph adjustment anyways.

Right now I have a 400w HPS on the main 10 plants and the rest of the grow room. I also have an LED UFO on all of the plants. As the grow heads forwards the two mini tents for the mothers will get closed off and attatched together with the LED UFO inside and 24/7 light to keep my mothers growing constantly. I chose the LED UFO to keep heat low because my apartment gets warm in the summer already and I have to reduce heat as much as possible. The main room for the flowering plants will then be covered by the 400w HPS on 12/12 time.

For people wondering about everything I've labeled a picture for you with all my gear showing what it is.

I'll be trying to do weekly to every other week updates so drop me your comments and let me know what you think!

Very nice setup. Question for you. So those bins with the multiple plants, how big are the pots? They are big enough for the entire grow? And if you have 5 or 6 going in a bin, as they grow, you will have one big mass of roots below correct? How difficult is it to flush at that point., How do you do it if the can't be lifted out of it?

I am trying to plan my grow. Still deciding between a DWC setup like yours, or a home made ebb and flow. So I am wondering how many can grow in a bin like that without running into problems. And I am sorry, I am not trying to make this thread about me in anyway.

I hope you continue to update thru your whole grow. I will be watching closely. Good luck.

Hey no worries, I like when people reply and we can compare set-ups. To be honest the first grow I did I really messed up, I had no idea what I was doing if you take a look at the first grow I posted. When I started out I put about 5 seeds in each rockwool cube and the first month had a ton of plants and cut a bunch of them after they got midsized and kept only the big ones. It ended up leaving a big dead root mass underneath and it made it hard for most of my plants to grow. I had 3 plants that really powered through it though. I didn't really understand the PH and everything at the time and was having a lot of issues just keeping everything in order, but I actually went back to this kind of set-up because of the consitency and ease of it. I usually put 6 gallons of water in it and do the pre-measured nutes from (stealthydro.com), which is where the buckets are from if you want more info. I tried fox farm for a while but had a lot of trouble with it and couldn't figure out feeding schedules as easily because its all different each week, whereas now I just have vegging nutes and flowering nutes, basic for both.

To your question on mobility I like to have my girlfriend help out if shes around but generally I find it pretty easy to manuever. I set it up so I can pull most the stuff out of the front of the tent without pulling cords out of sockets, etc... It's really easy to clear out and change the nutrients, I have little drains at the bottom of all the buckets as you can see. Even the large DWC bucket for the future NYC mother. I usually put them on top of a block or something and then drain the water into buckets and pour it out, then I just do my pre-measured nutes and add new water. I got a 2 stage water filtration filter and I will also say that I have seen a large difference in the quality of health of my plants since the purity of the water they recieve is cleaner. It really is worth it to improve your water, that is also one of the problems I believe that resulted in my last grow. By the end of this yes you will have a big mass of roots below, but usually the roots on bottom should be equal to the plants on top, and a root can be in mass what a plant is in leaves and width in a much smaller space. So my opinion is yes this is perfect for 5-6 plants per each. I chose this specifically because I think its perfect sized.

By the way I in no way support buying the stuff from stealth hydro if thats not for you, you can totally build this shit yourself and I completely reccomend doing so if you have the right tools to do it right. I can't do that stuff quite as well but have made these same buckets before, I just like the size of the stealth hydro ones because I've used them in the past. You can easily make this set up with a water pump and piece to diffuse the water, air stone and air pump. It's basically just DWC with an extra tiny water pump that supports the roots at earlier stages when they cant reach the water as easily. If you have more questions about your grow relating to mine feel free to post. Peace!

I only have time for a quick reply right now, headed out the door to work. Will reply more later tonight. I want to build something similar, except I have been considering using the igloo coolers instead of the rubber maid type products. I figure I would get more res temp control with a cooler. The marine line of coolers Igloo has look perfect. I have been looking at their 12 gallon one.

This is the one I am considering.

You definitely will get more rez temp control with something like a cooler, I'm sure. The only thing I would consider myself with that is how you're going to make the holes for your net pots with that super thick plastic top on that cooler. I like the rubbermaid for the fact that its thin and you can easily cut it with some scissors after you trace your net pots with a sharpie. To be honest the last thing I really pay attention to is the temperature of the resevoir. If my room is cool enough my rez is usually cool enough. If anything my biggest issue is room temperature, in the summer time I have to keep the A/C blasting in my place to keep it cool with the afternoon sun and the heat off my 400w HPS. Other than that my only other thing is the size. I would just recommend being careful going too big, it ended up making things entirely too bulky and the PH was much touchier and harder to adjust when I went for like a 12 gallon bucket or so. Other than that you're on the right track, set up your grow in your head before you execute it, you'll be happy you did. This grow is only now successful because I took the time to plan things out before I got started. Excited to see your grow, post back when you start up with it man!

Roughly 2 Weeks Update:

Everything continues to look really good in the grow room. I just put up my axial fans and took out the giant hunky ass fan (you can see in last weeks pics) in order to make things more roomy and the air movement already feels better in my tent which is keeping my plants cooler. So far I've seen no issues. I had a little flip out the other night when I saw a couple tiny white bugs on one of the leafs of the plants, but I smooshed them and have been spraying the room down for humidity in order to make sure there isn't a pest problem. I don't think there is, but anytime I see "a" bug I kind of flip a tube because I put so much work into this room. I have one plant on the left planter of haze that is just working hard and is getting huge, he seems to be about a week ahead of all the other plants, luckily I can vegg as long as I want. I would normally worry that the plant pulling ahead so far is male, but they're feminized seeds, anyone ever had a feminized turn male? And not hermaphrodite, I mean 100% male. Here are the pics for this week, hope you guys enjoy, drop me some comments!

2 Weeks Update:

Everything has continued to grow really great. My right side tub of the majority of diesels fell behind. I had been wondering why the diesel on the right side was getting so big while the rest stayed behind, turns out I forgot I put my extra hose on his planter. My gigantic haze plant on the left side planter is getting just massive. I had wondered if I had put an extra hose on him too but I haven't, he has just gotten huge from his one hose like the rest. I think if anything it has to do with the unreliability of these hoses and the pumps. I can't move my planter much to get my ph and ppm testers in without knocking out hoses from time to time. This is why my right side I think has been moving so slow these last two weeks. I bought new hoses and I'm fixing them up on the right side to work right again so hopefully by the next update the NYC Diesel's on the right will catch up. Drop me your comments or questions on my grow!

This is my super duper late update. I've been busy as crap the last month and lots has changed since the last update so lets start photo tour!

(This is a two post update, part one is June 28-29)

The last update I had officially started the attack on the Thrip population that was plaguing my plants. The Pyrethrum and Neem Oil in my sprayer plus putting Neem into the reservoir did a real number on the thrips. The first couple days after all the initial thrip populations had gone I did a second attack of Pyrethrum, and instructed my friend to go heavy on the Neem while I was gone for 10 days. By the time I returned there was not a Thrip in sight and there hasn't been one for a month since. I have discontinued use of Neem oil completely over the last month and resumed normal grow circumstances. Unfortunately the blueberry kush mother just couldn't handle all of the spray and change in conditions, she had to go.

And here are all the pictures of the rest of the grow from 5-28, at this point I am using my old reflector which you will see changes in the next update, so the light is much higher than it is now. Also the loss of the Blueberry mother has served me well as my giant haze plant has gotten so big it needs that extra space to spread out.

NYC Diesel Mother

Over the last month and a half the what was pretty big haze plant has turned into the most massive ass plant. The stem at the bottom is about as thick as all the rest of the plants stems combined. I don't know why this girl went crazy but lets just cross our fingers she's a beautiful female since I use feminized seeds! P.S. just remember this isn't the most recent picture update either, she's thicker since this time!

This is my super duper late update. I've been busy as crap the last month and lots has changed since the last update so lets start photo tour!

(This is a two post update, part two is July - 19) Part one is the post above.

Everything has been going extremely well the last month since the loss of the Blueberry mother except for one other loss due to my own error. I will begin inducing flowering in the next week or so. Some of my NYC diesel plants have really fallen behind the Haze's and I believe its because of hose issues with the water pump. I am getting ready to leave for a long trip I have to go on so will have my good friend watching over the start of the flowering process for about a month in a couple weeks. I am pushing the NYC diesel's to get ready for the change as the haze's especially my gigantic guy are all begging to be flowered soon. If my NYC Diesel's end up yielding a bit less I am okay with that as I find its harder to have a consistent canopy with seeds no matter what you do. Next grow will hopefully have a more even canopy as it should be clones of the NYC Diesel mother.

The unfortunate loss this month was one of my tiny plants on the NYC diesel side. I PH'd before I went to bed and was being careless as to where I squirted the PH liquid. The hoses weren't running much water on the roots as I basically run them as DWC plants now so I think the roots that hang in the air sat in PH down all night. When I woke up in the morning this is what I found.

Lesson learned, watch where you are dropping your PH!

And here you can see the Giant Haze plant that just continues to grow, even without a direct light on her anymore. The light is focused on all the rest of the canopy and still her crown keeps getting higher and higher.
