i know the hps prob guna be better.but question is about heat.i had like 11-23w cfls for my first grow in my upstairs bedroom whch is always warmer than rest of house.this time i was guna grow in basement or garage which is way cooler.how much more heat is that 250w hps (separate ballast)put off vs 11 23w cfls?i fig that many cfls had to be putting off some heat.i did some searching on the net but so many diff answers.i would really like to try hps.thanks

With a HPS you will need an exhaust fan for sure, otherwise there is a chance the lightbulb will get so hot it will explode.
CFL on the other hand, might not get so hot. Since the 250watts with the hoods don't have hose vents...
Just ordered this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HG1JRK0/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
mainly because I know it won't get hot at all and I can grow in my closet, and after a while Ill probably add a 300watt CFL to grow 2x as much.

Whats funny about the lamp set I ordered is that the lamp+bulb is priced under what the bulb by itself is cost... Which is why I bought it... Ill probably buy it again if its still on sale or w/e I need an other bulb.

Well a 250watt HPS/MH is going to put off alot of heat... with a fan 400cfm+ id say you'll be good.

Even at peak hours with a fan it will def keep the bulb cool.

Youll need an exhaust fan for sure though, id recommend a cool tube lamp fixture.
250watts of HPS is probably going to let you cover 4x4 area with room to clone.

I remember with a 600watt the bulb would be cool enough to run but it would still get hot to where the dirt would dry up in 24-35hours in 5gallons.

Yea I planned on 2x2.I dont go crazy with growing just enough for me.but my main question is about heat.I grew in my room with cfls last july which is hot as hell.my basement/garage is prob 20 degrees cooler.thats why im asking if I might be able to use a hps since its cooler down stairs

I forgot to say I also have central air.so when it is hot as hell in july ill have the ac on.I guess the only way to see if I can run a 250w hps is to give it a try.since theres so many diff opinions.

That is the best way to see what works.. But I will tell you you have to exaust don't put fans in if the air can't go anywhere.. It must exaust. keep it in mind

170 CFM with a carbon filter was too much for my 400w. I had to get a fan speed controller and turn it to 75%.

you will be fine with 170 cfm fan and filter like i have and fan speed controller to turn it to the correct speed.

Also having a good fan pointed at the light bulb will help keep the heat from building up around the light.
