this is trouble, it's not worth risking the entire harvest ... once it starts to flower you can just cut a limb off and put it in a cup of water in the house in a window
 
Here are some of my outdoor crop. The three in the small pot are destined for seed. When they get a bit bigger, I'm going to spray one with silver nitrate for a week and then throw them into the tent to flower (I'm taking part of the summer off from indoor growing). I have one more in a straw bail that is doing well also.

Genius! Looking to do some targeted pollination myself, and this is just the ticket. Is there a point in the male flowering process I should look for before chopping, or just do it as soon as their balls show up?

once the balls start forming, but before they start opening up is good ... if they're in small enough pots you can also just cut the plant back to a couple of the lower limbs and put the plant on a window sill as well .. you'll get more pollen that way, but it'll obviously take up more space still in the pot

For me its been my cantaloupe and honey dew melons ... ive tried planting 6 mounds 3 times ... nothing but rodent holes.

Oh yeah, its an escalating conflict over here too ... the melons are my favorites.

Ive tried flooding their holes, soapy water with chilies and garlic, baited have-a-heart traps. Tried to get him with the pellet gun one day but he got away. Most recently I just buried his hole every single morning and it appears he gave up reopening it ... but I know he's out there still ... lost two pepper plants last night.

Thanks. Mine are in the ground, so I’ll be cutting branches and killing and disposing of the remainder of the boys.

@stealthfader508 If so, how tall did they end up finishing in the hoop house last year? Wondering if they get crowded out at the top toward end of season. Got a cheap pvc hoop house that is decently large for personal use, but may just put the money up and get something more permanent... Wondering if itll be worth it.
