we won't know until we get there. We have the place to ourselves in the fall, but 4/20 will be many more other campers. We'll have to take what we can get, you'll have to find us.

My son graduates from HS this June. I'm going to have 20-30 people here for the celebration. Feeding them is going to be expensive, so I'm thinking of roasting a pig. So I have a few "pig roaster" questions.....
How many cinder blocks are needed?
The wire to hold the pig, what do you use exactly?
How much charcoal, and how often do you add the charcoal?
How many pounds, and what do you pay for a pig?
How long do you roast the pig?
Thanks for the 411, I think the family/friends would get a kick out of roasting a pig.

Congratulations to your son! I think a pig roast would be perfect for a graduation party. It's kind of a plug & play. You put it on in the morning & it's ready to eat in the afternoon & you only flip it once. Build 4 very small charcoal fires in each corner & slowly feed them just enough charcoal to keep them going. I use hickory flavored charcoal to add a little smoky aroma. Ruby is correct use 52 cinder blocks to build the box. The rack is made from rebar & remesh wire welded together. You can buy everything at Home Depot. They will last forever. The one I have has roasted more than a doz hogs. The pigs we have been roasting run around 75-80lbs. Anything over 100lbs gets hard to handle/flip. Have your butcher "Butterfly" the pig so it will lay flat on the racks. Place the pig between the racks & wire them together for cooking. I like to sprinkle a little 'Pappy's" seasonings inside but just wash off the outer skin for krispy chicharon's. Good luck, you guy's will have a great time...

P.S. The pigs cost around $250-$300 & use about 4-5bgs of charcoal....(:

I've been to a Hawaiian bbq (here in the states) and they dug a pit, filled it with hot coals and put a pig wrapped in kelp leaves or something into the pit over the coals. Covered it back up with the dirt and about 10 hrs later it was dinner time. We layed out a tarp and dropped the pig on it and the meat fell right from the bone. Great idea on the roaster. That thing looks hearty.

This roaster is easy to build, you can take it anywhere & no digging. we take it out to the lake every year....

I've eaten pig from real athentic luau over on the islands 5 times. Never liked it.
@doublejj his way is way better tasting.
I dunno if those pigs used in the luau were wild, and had that gamey taste, or because of the bananna leaves and burlap and other stuff they use. Whatever it is, the pork at the bbq is better imo

The truth! Hawaii locals bbq can't compete with jj's bbq pig!

IMHO it has to be the leaves and junk they use to season it, because you can't beat wild hog compared to domestic and if you know how to BBQ/smoke, domestic ain't bad lol. Yum!
You know what though, all my buddies from the trades who live in hollister pig hunt. I've tried it every single way they would do it up. If you were like me, and like farm raised/store bought pig better, there's no hiding the gamey taste(IMO)
I'm a wussy I know
