2 plants in the same pot?

the temptation to title this thread "2 girls 1 cup" was overwhelming but i was afraid nobody would read it...

just a quick newbie question:
i notice that people almost always plant each of their plants in separate pots. while there are lots of reasons why one would want to do this, is there any reason why you couldn't just plant 2 in the same pot? (assuming it was a large enough pot with enough dirt for both plants) would roots become intertwined and cause problems?

Plants are like children.

2 girls can share a room a little while and there will be no problem. but eventually, they will grow up, and the room that once was adequate will no longer be able to house them both.

and if you plant two regular seeds... what if one is a male.. how are you gonna hack him out without spilling the pollen all over your girl

usually you dont want to plant more than 1 in a pot b.c one will end up taking the nutrients from the other. maybe if the pot was big i suppose but i did that and ended up with 1 in the end! hope this helps,

Yeap...its all about the root system...when plants are planted in the same containers together their root systems intertwine and fight for nutrients...not a good way to have a plant reach its full potential

Now with that being said, IF the pot was large enough and the plants were spaced far enough apart, and the plants were not vegged for too long, the root systems might stay apart and everything is all well with the world, but whats the point in taking that chance?

The biggest problem that I can think of is this:
Even plants grown from the same pack of seeds have a chance of growing quite differently. If one plant stretches and the other stays short, you will have a hard time keeping them each at their optimal distance from the lighting. Other reasons would include the possible spread of disease & pests from one plant to another. I have also found some plants grow poorly under identical conditions as the rest of the plants. This may require adding extra nutrients, withholding nutrients, etc. Hard to custom treat one plant that is in the same pot as a healthy growing plant.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. One mistake could mean two problems

did it. Ended up with one huge, one tiny tiny plant.

ROFLed at the 2 girls idea. Also, turning for even light might be hard. In between the plants might suffer? In DWC this is common, however!

putting two plants in one container just becomes a limiting factor. it won't produce as much because both plants shared the same resources. i do plant several seeds in the same container. then split them up at about this stage.
