Alright I am contending with my first issue right now - gnarly green algae bloom going on. You can see it collecting in my snorkel in my last photo - well yesterday's res change was mostly green in hue. I'm checking my water 2x a day anyway so I know I caught the bloom fast. I also rinsed the roots in tap water and cleaned out the res and its snorkel. Today things looked much better but I did a full res change again anyway just to be sure and I'll do this every day until it's been eradicated. Also, I now have the snorkel covered up, which I clearly should have been doing since day 1.

In better news, the trichs are starting to show and hot damn, she is smelling lovely. <3

Sucks about the algae hassles. Hopefully that's all behind you now. I use a section of cheapo dollar store pool noodle to cover the snorkel.

Yeah that was pretty naive of me to just leave it there exposed like that but I think we're good. Pool noodles really are like hydro's swiss army knife aren't they? Haha thanks for the idea man - much prettier than the tin foil I have on it now.

I think the reason that GH makes those tubes blue is to prevent algae but it obviously doesn't work. Any darker and I wouldn't be able to see the water level. I've acquired at least fifteen pool noodles over the past three years and not one of them has ever found their way anywhere near a swimming pool.

that is so cool you call the blue rez tube a snorkel! @abandonconflict would appreciate that because he is a scuba diver. I suggest doing a major flush of your system to knock all the algae out of your bucket.
I had algae stuck on the snorkel and I massaged it out by pinching it over and over then I took a papertowel and twisted it up and got all the goop off.

Haha I'm an avid snorkeler - it seemed fitting. :)

Week 5.5 and I'm getting antsy. :D

I got the algae bloom under control. The lovely lady never seemed to skip a beat from it. This is actually the first plant I've grown this way (big, single plant with no scrog net) - it feels so foreign to grow the plant so au naturale, which actually makes such little sense when you stop to think about it. Anyway, I've only done some minor defoliation to keep bud sites more or less exposed and I have been tying back the taller shoots to keep it relatively even. I must say, when I defoliate and I catch some wiffs of the aromas - this may be the best smelling plant/strain I've ever grown. Too bad I can't attach that to the post, I'd love to share. Anyway, thanks for looking, hope you're all doing well.

Sooo my landlord needed to have a crew of electricians all up in the same room as the grow bc the entire breaker box along with wiring needed to be updated to comply with some code. The short of it is that I needed to wrap up this stinky bitch in a black plastic garbage bag and hide it outside while the guys did their 7hrs of work so apologies for the squished looking buds. Anyway, i think I'm a week out now so I just started her on a reduced feed along with some dry Koolbloom feed. Buds are fat and dense and the smell is so damn nice. I'm guessing harvest in 7-10 days :boner

Nice looking buds! I hate when maintenance comes to do their inspections . The only good thing about the Pandemic was they cancelled all their inspections and bug spraying . They usually come every quarter to check smoke alarms and change air filters . I am so glad you were able to hide her easily. That must have been so stressful. I have done some crazy ass shit hiding my plants. One time I painted the entire room to try to override the smell of the plant with the smell of strong paint but the guy detected a smell of the plant even with the toxic paint smell. But it was hidden so well he never figured it out .

I was so concerned with the smell but that turned out to be a non-issue. After the 2 days of no power, it seems to have completely fucked up the plant. The trichs stopped changing and it started sprouting new growth all over the buds. I'm pretty pissed about this, she was doing so well. I'm past 9 weeks already and every day I see new calyxes sprouting out. Mf landlords

So final update. I started extending the dark cycle to 14hrs at first, then 15hrs, and finally 16. This seemed to have stalled out the new calyx growth that had started and it ripened her up pretty well. I also discovered purple rosin. I had no idea this was thing but if I understand it correctly, if you happen to have a strain with a large amount of anthocyanins and you press some fresh cuts (2-3 days of drying), you can end up with it. Well i was a little impatient and decided to press a small bud to try out the new harvest (cut yesterday) and low and behold, purple rosin.

Here's how some of the main colas looked:

I don't feel like I could have handled my situation much better but in hindsight (and for anyone starting off with a Waterfarm looking for info), it's important to consider algae from day one and that was this grows big fuck up. There's always one with me I feel like haha. It's stupid that the design even leaves the snorkel out in light at all. And add some kind of light blocking material to cover up the hydroton (panda film worked great).
