1st Time Indoor, Kinda..

So buds are now legal here in Cali. Day after it was official I begged my wife to let me grow a plant, just 1 plant I said.. Well Now a month later I've got a 24x48x60 inch tent with a MarsHydro Mars300(132 true watt) & 4 seedlings cooking up quite nicely. My question is a little different though. The 1 stipulation my wife made was that I keep them outside(she hates the smell) so at the moment I'm keeping the tent at 73.5F with a cool $15 outlet that let's me turn on a small space heater while it's on my balcony :P It's been going this way for about a week & all is good thus far. I also setup a small webcam inside to watch my plants while I'm at work.

I've ordered the FoxFarms trio & cal-Mag, already have PH up/down & will probably end up getting Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz & Cha Ching as I need it.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated but my real question is related to lights. This Mars300 is dope! I Killer deal & so far it kicks ass but while I initially planned on just the 1 plant I'm now germinating 3 other strains & my thinking is I may as well get my tent's worth & throw another Mars300 in there, maybe even a few side bulbs later on.. What do you guys think?

im in a 3x3 and considering doing the same but with my viparspectra version of your light (also love it).

adding the extra light makes perfect sense for that many plants and itll work great with the rectangular shape of your grow area. I have a feeling you might get cramped w 4 plants depending on how you manage them and their genetics but enjoy the ride.

Im also in cali. As soon as that shit passed i was on Amazon. in a 3x3x7 tent indoor about 3 weeks in, 1 GDP plant that ill clone soon and start another. tent just starting to smell heavenly. fuckin exciting, good luck w your grow. stick around, the people here are extremely helpful.

Thanks man. Yeah I seriously considered the viparspectra, think it was just a bit more expensive. I'm thinking that in a couple weeks another Mars300 would be enough to do 3 decentsized plants..

I also ordered a few Daisy's: http://daisy.si/ & am hoping they get here before xmas so I can not call my buddy to come fuck up feeding my plants lol.

You should get a 600 :) You are on your way to nice buds. Careful with the fox farms nutes. Depending on soil you might not need them for 2-3 weeks. Good luck !

daisy looks dope. careful w your light distance my plant was heat cupping even at like 1 foot.

what webcam did you use? i was thinking of doing that.

Well it's going to be hard enough to explain buying another Mars300 to the Mrs, let alone a 600. I've got my light at about 2 feet right now, should I go a little closer?

I just used a Alarm.com camera I had(I work for a security company) the 520-IR & then made sure to disable it's nightvision/IR shit that would keep my tent from being completely dark in night mode. It's a wifi camera & I check it like a million times a day lol

2 feet is fine, a lot of ppl will tell u thats way too far and its gonna stretch your stems but the tolerance of the plant varies widely based on age, genetics, and watering. ppl using the vipar version of your light for instance report good results with 6", 12", and 24". But even at 12 my plants upper leaves cupped badly in a 75 degree tent. The "back of the hand" heat test doesnt seem to apply to LEDs.

If you want to play with intensity, id suggest lowering your light an inch every 24 to 48 hours. signs of light stress will be first leaves aiming their tips upward, then cupping lengthwise, then finally yellowing and brown crisping. catch it early and get that light up.

Definitely get more light also that 60" tent is gonna get short real quick. I am using the viparspectra for 4 and HID for another 4 and I have to keep my light at least 30" away so far. im interested in seeing your grow throw some pics up and check out my white cookies grow it's also my first haha

  1. Your wife sounds sort of like an asshole. If she hates the smell of weed she is in the wrong state, and married the wrong dude, apparently. Consider getting a better one.
  2. Run two of those lights in a tent that size.
You will be happier in both cases.

Right! My wife doesn't smoke but let me build my rooms and get whatever so far I've pushed her to the point where I've gotten close to 10k in different LEDs to try them and all the other shit in between. Hooray for awesome wife's and such!

Welcome! Fellow CA grower here.

Do you have a charcoal canister to filter the odor from your tent? If you set up a tent correctly, there should be no smell.

And I vote for another light....if you're going to do it, do it right. Get a lot of light for those girls and they will reward you.

Good luck and have fun!!! Hope your wife can learn to enjoy the hobby!!

Hooray for my awesome wife is what I meant to say! I shouldn't have dissed OP's wife, I should have praised my own. I am in a similar situation, she doesn't smoke at all and has basically zero vices, and shit ain't even safe to grow here! Like, way not safe, and she lets me do it anyway. Maybe OP's wife is cool in other ways...my bad for saying it the way I did.

I have the coolest wife ever! Once we move into a house she won't mind it in the garage, we just have very little space right now & doesn't want the tent in our guest room when people come over lol. I'm going to get another light in about a month, for now just the 1 is covering my small pots fine but once I transplant them to bigger pots I'll definitely need it.

I don't have a carbon filter setup just yet, figured it can wait a little while but will definitely need it once they start flowering.

The big reason my wife is hesitant on this is the cost I think. This is the 2nd hobby I've started this year & the 1st being mini quadcopter racing we've spent nearly $4k in the last few months on gear. Still another $80 on a light, $150 on carbon filter/fan etc. + $20 here & there from there on is negligible, just hard to justify this time a year.

I'll take some pics tonight when I get home. I'm pretty proud of it thus far. It was super cold outside last night & my little setup worked perfectly to keep it warm :)

I'm still waiting on my Daisy.si auto watering gadget but am going to New Jersey soon for a full 4 days & am wondering how to keep them watered while I'm gone. I was thinking I'd water them good right before I leave & possibly leave a bit of water in the collector below the pots so they'd absorb that when needed. Think that'll be ok?

Here's a shot I just took from the live feed inside the tent. I could show a live feed but it's probably not the best idea to post it for anyone to see forever, you never know right? Just the 4 little pots for now :) The little heater is pointed towards the bucket/away from the plants so it doesn't dry them out but I did notice that the 2 pots closer to it dry a little quicker than the others so I rotate them which is probably a good idea anyway. On the other side by the camera I have a bowl of water with a small towel hanging into it which does well to keep the humidity up. I know I need to add a fan soon & am either going to just get 2x 6 inch fans OR do something like this:
where he's got a fan between the lights & then I'll use another fan mid/below the canopy.

I'm germinating some feminized seeds so those 4 there are actually just some seeds my boss gave me, he doesn't quite know what they are(cross between sour diesel, ak47, G13 or jack herrer) so I was just hoping to get 1 good female out of them.. Now I'm just finding out that there's a decent chance those seeds were from a hermaphrodite plant. My understanding is that if the plant was stressed into growing pollen sacks & then pollenated itself or others that all the seeds will be female, much like the process using colloidal silver to produce feminized seeds BUT if the plant's genetics were hermaphrodite than the seeds will then all be hermaphrodite a like. Problem is that he doesn't know which it was :/

So I'm looking at maybe just trashing these 4 & starting over with the feminized bubba kush, pineapple train wreck & girl scout cookies I'm germinating right now. Thoughts?

That's a nice setup dude! I'm just using this camera: https://www.amazon.com/Alarm-com-Indoor-Wireless-Camera-ADC-V520IR/dp/B009VHD2ZS which I had laying around since I work for a security company, so by no means am I suggesting it or that there's not better out there for the price but I would suggest a wifi camera you can easily mount & network like this one.

So my babies are kicking ass! I gave 1/4 nutrients last week & they more than doubled in size. They're still really short 4-5 inches but super bushy. 1 in particular has it's bottom half leafs almost in the dirt except for me moving them so they rest on the side of the pot.
I moved my light up a couple inches a few days ago to see if they'd stretch a but but nothing yet. I know this is a good problem to have but do you guys have any suggestions?

Also I just ordered a Meizhi reflector 450w for $109 on ebay. For that price with all the awesome reviews I couldn't pass it up. Now I'm looking at 3 gallon pots & a mix of FF ocean forest & 30% perlite. I've heard so many good things about smart pots but am a little concerned with the drainage in my 4x2 tent. Should I just water them outside the tent & put them back in once they've drained the excess or?

So I am a brand new grower as well, trying to figure this out on my own with the internet. Started with a 32" x 32" x 60" tent and vivarspectra 200w (450w rated) LED. I think its perfect for that size. Because this hobby is consuming, in a few months time I had added a 4'x4'x7' tent and I put 4 of those cheap Chinese 300W rated lights. Anyway, my observation is that the cheap Mars lights (or Vipar) are perfect for personal/hobby/medical growers. I'm averaging close to 1g/watt harvest which I think is great for a newb making every possible mistake. I plan one light per plant in flower and its a perfect fit. I like having four separate lights because if I have one plant finishing late I can turn off two of the lights and save the power, also I can move the lights around. Way more flexibility than if I had gotten a single 1000W LED. For your 2x4, two of these lights should work fantastic. But you won't need the 2nd light until your plants are well into flower, you can get one of those lights on Ebay for less than $70. This set up is going to pay for itself and then some your first harvest. Even if you didn't spend a lot of money on weed before, because staying home is going to be more enjoyable now. And you have another cheap hobby to occupy your time. And if you grow the right strains, you can make your own medicine (for almost any complaint, from sore muscles to cancer to depression to diabetes) and process it in your kitchen to make pills, suppositories, creams, vaginal lubricant, etc. I probably save $200 a month in alcohol alone since I harvested my first marijuana plant. Don't beg and plead with your wife bro, show her that this little "fun" hobby of yours is in her best interest. There are just too many benefits and the costs are negligible when you do the math. Every home should have a tent.

Thanks for your feedback. I figure it'll be a lot nicer with more than 1 light like you said to be able to move them around, like maybe lower my Mars300 on 1 side of the tent for the smaller seedlings I just started & have the 450w a bit higher for the bigger ones. The point of the other was to fill the tent. The Mars300 is working great right now but it simple math that if I want decent yields I needed way more light. Mostly in flower you're right but now too when I transplant to their final pots(very soon) & spread them out. I'm just going to run the 450w on it's veg mode(more blue light). But as always if you have any better ideas/suggestions I welcome all the feedback I can get! :)

On another note as I said I gave 1/4 nutrients to my 4 that were about 3 weeks in veg(I'm not sure when to say veg actually starts?) anyway they loved it, then just water 2 days later, then again with caliMagic a few days ago. Last night I noticed most the lower leafs were turning yellowish(hard to tell with all the purple/pink but it's in the pic) so after some research I figured it was a nitrogen deficiency, fed with a conservative amount of FF Grow Big, a bit more caliMagic & this morning there was a noticeable improvement :) So I'm fairly certain I did well but again any additional ideas/suggestions welcome.
