1st Hydroponic Experiment (Bag Seeds) Hydro Experts STEP IN!!!

Be careful how you read the packaging on CFL lights. You are probably only pushing 184 watts instead of the 800 you are thinking. If you look HERE you will notice that it says this bulb is 100 watts but really it only uses 23 watts. They say 100 watts because its lumens (visible light output) are equal to a 100 watt incandescent bulb which it would usually replace in a home. Look closely at your bulb and it probably says 23 watts around the base. Now there are real 100 watt CFLs but they are really big and usually only found at specialty stores or on the internet.

CFLs are a type of fluorescent light and T5s (long tubes in a fixture) are another type. They both work well when kept very close to the plants. You are right to be using 6500k for veg this is the right color for vegetative growth. I use a little over 400 watts of T5 for veg since it is a little more efficient than CFL and spreads the light out more to cover the canopy. I like how my plants get extremely bushy. Metal Halide is great for veg as well and has its advantages such as better penetration which gets more light to lower parts of the plant however heat can become a problem if you don't have sufficient ventilation.

Once you switch to flowering you will need to switch from 6500k light to around the 2700k range to help produce more flowering. You could continue to use fluorescent but I switch to 600watt hps at this time. I get anywhere from a 1/2 to a whole one using this method. Heres a page with some good grow lights http://www.htgsupply.com/growlightsubcategories.asp?categoryID=1
I agree with growhigh a 400hps could give you 200gram give or take and its not that expensive. Theres also some cheap t5s on there I would go for 400 + watts though and realize they will produce SOME heat although much less. Either way I would also look into a carbon filter w/ inline fan to take care of heat and smell. Then figure out which flowering nutes you will use and your set. All this should run you around $300-$350 so your paying $1-2 per gram when its all said and done. Good luck and don't take shortcuts in this trade you get what you put in.

Thanks alot indica. Ill be sure to follow up on your notes. youve been a big help. and also another question. My ph balance is different every day am Is this normal?

Im glad to be able to help. If you meant your ph goes up everyday this is pretty normal. Plant use acidic compounds and compunds break down causing ph to rise. Some nutrients maintain ph better than others and some ph up and down brands advertise that their product holds ph more steady. Many growers dont even use ph up because tap water is usually above 7 so its usually only needed to compensate for errors.

BTW these lil ladies were germinated about 3 weeks ago and look how bushy they get under the T5. I topped twice already. It just goes to show that metal halide is not necessary in veg for thick thriving plants.

I still say go with hps for flowering.

Idica can you send me a link to where I can look at the light that your using? Do you top at every node? And yes my ph is up everyday, the kit that im using is the general hydroponics ph kit. Im also using the fox farm tri pack for my nutes. The directions on the bottles isnt that very descriptive so im kind of lost on that aswell. Im using one teaspoon of big bloom for every gallon and a half cup of grow big. I added two more cfls this morning and since then the plants have thickened alot more. You can almost watch these things grow its crazy. Here is 2 more pics of the plants and the 2 added CFLs.

First off I would not be using bloom nutes during veg. Start using those when you switch to 12/12 or a week or two later.

I use THIS light for veg and it kicks ass without producing a lot of heat. Its a little expensive though.

If I hadn't topped my girls so many times they would probably be twice as big but Im purposely trying to slow them down so a new seed can catch up meaning I can flower all at the same time. So yeah im topping at every node so I will probably have over 30 tops by the times this seed pops and catches up but I want to see how these will perform with more but smaller colas. As soon as the plants get a few days without being topped they will shoot up and I'll flower all 4 using the scrog method.

If you want to go cheap but still have the best I would reccomend getting THIS which is a combo of Metal Hailde (best light for vegging) and High Pressure Sodium (best light for flower). You will see THIS if you search ebay for an inline fan/filter combo. You will need this stop the smell from overpowering your house and to remove hot air from your grow if you switch to MH/HPS (HID) lighting. Always check ebay for the product you are about to buy - you may save a lil.

If you have more money you can look at electronic ballasts and air cooled hoods for HID lighting. These improve performance and dont cause as much heat but they will cost you and arnt totally necessary.

If you feel your cfls are sufficient for veg you could look at the same light I recommended. That combo wont cost much more than a standalone HPS and you will have to buy the fan/filter anyway to run the hot hps so why not have the MH capability ready next veg to get twice the speed? Theres a lot of options you could also run a 600 watt like I do and they sell combos for those too but I just use the T5s. A 600 will cost around $20/m (depending on your electric prices) if its on 12 hours a day.

Peace,

I dk if this is a problem but I came home after being away for the weekend and the plants are getting huge. My plants look like one giant bush. Is this a problem? I also went ahead and changed the cfls down to 2600k and 12/12 lighting. Here are some pics please comment.

Thanks man. They all turned out females I believe. Its been one month so I should know. I also just got my ppm meter so I will be listing the numbers later on.

Those are looking really good congrats. I figured I wouldnt leave you hanging since I recommended topping and your plants are super bushy. In a couple weeks I would recommend pruning lower branches that arnt getting any light. What this will do is put more energy towards the tops of the plant and cut down on lower grade "popcorn buds" at the bottom of the plants. I would wait for the plants to stretch more first under those 2600s so you can be more accurate. Do some research so you understand what I'm saying. I would explain but so many have written up tutorials already on pruning. Also try to turn your net pots so tops from seperate plants are away from each other. If to tops are fighting for space consider bending them over away from each other (supercropping) or tying them with string. I wouldnt reccomend topping after starting 12/12 but supercropping is okay for the first 2 weeks especially to even out canopy which is really important with cfls due to their lack of penetration. basically make it so all bulbs can stay really close to the canopy. Good luck you could pull a qp or more with the right attention.

I switched over to 2600 because I was hoping that they would stretch a little bit because they are over laping so much. There is just about nomore room for anything else until I find I better place to put this stuff. Also my next time around I think im just going to use 4 net pots instead of 6. I also got my tds meter in the mail today.

http://cgi.ebay.com/HM-Digital-TDS-EZ-Meter-Tester-Water-ppm-Purity-Filter-/280349439863?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item414620f777

When I put it in the water it read 139 x10 so the ppm reads 1390. I dk if that is accurate or not.

Let me know what you guys think?

I kept lights on 24 hours when I had them in the dome for a couple weeks. I went to 18/6 when I switched them to the DWC reservoirs.

yea it seems high to me aswell but its an ebay ppm meter. Im just going to stay on schedule with the foxfarm nutrient chart

Exactly. If there hasn't been any major recent changes then the plants will be telling you with their leaves. Tip burn beyond anything really minor = too high. Light green = too low or some kind of lockout.

There is 3 plants doing great and 3 doing okay they are kind of small only because they are root bound from me not transplanting them. But now the three are hogging all of the light and I was concidering taking the other 3 out So the others can have the rest of the light. What do you guys think? And also they are starting to stretch now because I switch the bulbs but that what I was going for. I switch there lighting over so I can get them to flower quicker so I can start on better seeds next time. What would you guys do? Change the lights to keep them bushier or keep the flowering lights in and have them stretch anyways so I can start on a better strain????????????????
