Well, I ran a test with the cfl box today, where I reversed the intake tube to make a double exhaust and removed the acrylic panel underneath for air intake. After about 45 mins, the room was 98˚F (18˚ over room temp)! Apparently, having the acrylic and in/out fans saves me about 11˚.

I was just looking at the pic and I was like.. that intake can't be in the right spot haha glad you made both exhaust. It looks cool at least.

Where would you put the intake? I'd like to hear any ideas at this point

I'm still trying to figure out how to get the airflow better in this thing. Shit, I even opened my cfls to try to possibly remote-ballast them and get them out of the box entirely, but everything is packed in there tight, with exposed circuit boards and shit I don't want to mess with. Basically, I have to get all the heat from the lights taken care of by these two computer fans and ducting, because the quiet cabinet exhaust fans have to be the only ones running, and have filters...
I don't really have any idea what to do now

much appreciated, Daniels. I read through the thread, and apparently remote-ballasting cfls doesn't really do much for heat. (seemed to make sense to me)

Author: "Turns out it may not help out much with heat. I checked the temp and it seems that almost all the heat comes from the bulb itself. The ballast remained at about 80 degrees while the bulb climbed to 180 degrees."

As of this point, if I add any filters to my system (which will be essential), I will be running way too hot. I've decided not to use filters for flowering, and just throw them into the flowering chamber when they start to smell.

My problems come down to the fact that my cabinet is in the back side of a poorly insulated room (opposite side of door + window), which is in a relatively warm/sometimes hot climate. When its hot outside, its hot in the room, when its cold outside, its cold in the room. I knew this problem from the start, but I thought I'd be able to solve it with a lot of ventilation. I don't have much choice because I'm renting this room, and my modifications can only be minimal and non-permanent. The stealth problem is that all intake and exhaust must be on the back side of the cabinet, facing the wall (about a 3-4 inch gap).

The room ambient temp rarely gets over 80˚F, so my idea was to hold ambient temps inside by using a cool-tube like device, which, in this case of the metal box, doesn't work as well as planned.

The flowering room has the same area, but twice as tall (and directly underneath). I'm thinking of using to a 150W HPS in a cool tube with a remote ballast outside, instead of my 2700K cfls (just use them for mixed-spectrum vegging).

I'll be researching other small grows with similar temp/stealth issues, so if anyone knows of one, I'd like to hear about it, THx.

Kinda thought the same on the Cfl's. Look at my system for a 150W HPS, now CMH in the fridge. You might get some Cool Tube & Air flow ideas from it.

Is there any passive intake near the bottom of your grow cab? Cause if you have two fans exhausting, sometimes that's enough to get the air flowing without any more fans.

There are 2 passive intakes near the bottom of the cab.

Trying to think a little outside the grow-box, I rearranged my room today, where the cabinet is now closer to a tall window, which is on a perpendicular wall. At the beginning, there wasn't much difference, but when it got cooler at dusk, I was able to shave off 3 degrees by using a fan to push air across the window, towards the cabinet (I'm pretty anti-AC, trying to keep my energy use as low as possible).

Yeah I don't like AC either but I'm a CFL user so it's not really necessary. Well, I would just keep fiddling with it. It is a science so you just have to keep tweaking it until it seems to be dialed in.

Well, today I bought a 150w HPS system for my flowering chamber
For $47 USD, I got:
-150w hps lamp (the clear cylinder tube style)
-150w ballast with ignitor
-E40 socket (yes, the extra-large one for HID's)
-19 feet of thick wire
-end plug

I had to also buy a 110-->220V transformer that is 350w capable, which set me back another $31. I guess I had to double the wattage for the ballast to fire-up.

This seems to be all I need. Any opinions are welcome, especially with the transformer, if anyone has experience with those.

I took these photos last night. Both of my plants are looking pretty droopy and their initial leaves (not serrate leaves) are pretty yellow, if that means anything. I've been watering every couple of days, because they seem to be drying out quickly. I pour water until it starts dripping out the bottom - is that enough? I don't think I am over watering, as they seem to dry out so fast, and i'm using a moisture meter.

Also, I've been running 84-86˚F with the lights on, with 30-40% humidity with the plants about 1-2 inches from the lights, so I'm wondering if the leaves are curling down because of a little heat stress? The newer leaves on top seem to be pretty nice and perky, but the lower (older) leaves are the ones really drooping. I am running lower temps now, around 80˚F with lights on.

i have added no nutrients, although I have this rooting solution, which I think is like superthrive, but haven't used it.

any ideas?

I got a Ceramic Metal Halide and LOVE it. I would go with one of them. for a 150W you'd need a Pulse start Metal Halide ballast. A Cool Tube will help with temps too. IAm5toned will have a good explaination on wiring. I saw you asked him there.

Cool, yeah, by stalking your fridge thread, I saw that you're using a CMH - - but I thought I'd go with the HPS, because it gives out more lumens/watt. Is there a significant temp difference with the CMH? That would bring me over. Actually, I have to take my hps bulb back anyways, because I just noticed they accidentally gave me a 100w. I think I can use my current ballast with a CMH (from what I understand, they can't be used with digi ballasts, which I don't have)

Yah, I thought I'd leave a post for IAm5toned, as I want another opinion on the transformer. (too bad I don't own this apt.... i'd just wire up a 220V outlet)

Also, one more big thing... I can't get a pyrex bake a round, so I thought I'd go out looking for glass tubes. (i think i may even be able to get away with a thick acrylic for a 150w bulb). Other than lantern glass, do you have any ideas on how to find a glass tube?? thx!!

Those look overwatered to me. Next time you check the soil for dryness poke your finger like 2 inches under the soil and if it's damp it's fine. Otherwise water it. I just think they would look a lil more crispy if it was heat stress but it may be. Just from my experiences I'd guess overwatering.

I explained and uploaded some pics of my veg light box, which is working well, although hasn't lowered the temps as much as I would have liked.

I posted details here in Mature's thread, who has done a separate-chamber cfl setup.

any ideas on making the ventilation more efficient are appreciated!

Hey bro hows it going? I have a question for you, how did you secure those light sockets in your reflector? I made a diy reflector and wanted to use sockets like that, but I couldn't come up with a way to secure them without making it look ghetto. I ended up using the big round white fixtures you see used for temporary lighting on construction sights and stuff. I like yours much better though because they are so much smaller and look alt cleaner.

HPS may give out more Lumens/Watt, but the spectrum is not nearly as good. The temp difference is slight I would say, but tomorrow my 150W goes 'on line' to start flowering 2 Royal Kush so I have better records of it's temp runs to compare to. My 400W in the veg area has unbelievable node spacing.
A 250W and 400W use a HPS non-dig ballast, the 150W down to 50W use a pulse start Metal Halide ballast.
Can't you get a Bake-a-Round from E-Bay? I've ordered them off there. I've been looking for an alternative for a while and have struck out.

Yah, i just read a PDF that went through the spectrum issue. I may try it in the future, but for now I have an HPS ballast, so I'm stuck with it. Either way, it beats the shit out of cfl's!! (and I'll be using less wattage than my planned 420w cfl grow). I wanted to avoid the Bake-a-round because of its thickness, and today I went to a bunch of lighting fixture stores, and bought a great piece of glass that is a bit short (exactly the length of the bulb), but will serve very well, and is thinner, but not too thin. I will post pics when I have my cool tube ready, hopefully in a few days. (I was really lucky to find that glass, it wasn't anywhere on the display floor, a girl went to the back to get it - so I actually wouldn't recommend trying too many light stores for this (call first).

Thanks for stopping by. Yah, I love these little sockets, they mount super clean. There are 2 little holes in the bottom of the socket for mounting screws (see pic below), and I just used some small bolts that fit in the little recessed holes inside the socket. For extra support, I mounted a little L-channel on the outside, which you can see on the front of the box in the image with the exhaust tubes. This is resisting the weight of the bulb, which really pulls down. I like working with metal, so I did this box this way, but I would probably do wood in the future, as it may insulate the heat a bit better. (my box cools still very quickly after the lights go out - I just leave the fans on for an extra 10 mins)

Just remember to wire the sockets before you mount them, its easier. And find bolts with small heads that will fit in the little recessed holes inside the socket

On my more droopy Atomic Haze, I'm seeing some brown spots that are a bit worrying. I am ph'ing my water to about 6.0-6.2, and thinking maybe that is it. I'm pretty sure I have overwatered very recently, but I thought I'd put this up and see if anyone has any recommendations. My plants are still droopy, but apparently growing.
I have added no nutes.
My healthier plant has 1 or 2 smaller versions of these brown spots. The pics below are on the 1st set of serrate leaves on my less healthy plant.

I thought I had underwatered, and I watered all plants completely. I think this was a mistake.

thanks,

Today, my leaves are still very curly, but now very dry as well, almost crusty. My soil mix has a shitload of vermiculite in it, and I'm wondering if I should start feeding them, maybe they ran out of nutes.

Today is day 19 from breaking ground.

I have a 10-10-10 formula and a 04-14-08 formula - - should I start using it, maybe at 1/4 strength?

I really don't want to burn them.

Right now:
- 77˚F 60% humidity
- 315w of cfls
- the larger plant is 7cm tall, and has 66% of suggested amount of soil (1 gallon per foot of height)
- I watered today, as the soil reading was dry. Last watered 3 days ago.
- fan is blowing against an interior wall, and plants are shaking ever so lightly
