So this is going to be first real grow (tried when I was a kid and got busted by the rents). Under my house I have a 4x6x4 area where I'm going to build my grow box. To start with I am going to grow auto flowers I have lemon skink, lowryder 2, and Hindu kush. I feel that autoflowers are a good way to get my feet wet. I'm going to go down the CFL rout as it is going to be mainly for personal use and selling to friend what ever I don't consume. I plan on only growing 5 at a time, starting with lowryder

Here are my questions
1) how many watts of cfl should I have ( or should I just get a MH)?
2) Soil or hyrdo? (I live really near a hyrdo shop)
3) if I go cfl will I need to build in ventilation?
4) a little off topic but I am assuming I can pollinate auto flowers (I'm growing b/c I'm sick of shelling out for weed)

any advise would be great I'm going to
start a grow journal and will
post a link.

Thanks

1) At least 1000 Lumens per square foot - so if you use your whole 4x6 amount of ground space - that's 24000 lumes at least.... but serious growers recommend 3000 lumes per square foot, which would be 72000 lumens... a 42w CFL is what? 1400ish lumens? So it's all about how much of that space you use..
2) How much do you want to spend? and how much time/devotion do you want to give to your plants? Hydro may grow better plants - but you can really mess up and lose your whole crop if you aren't precise... so soil is best for many beginners. BUT - it's all on you really...
3) All types of lighting needs ventilation... just some need more than others... with a grow area that size, though, with that many CFLs, you would definately need some pretty good ventilation... Don't forget, it's not just for heat, but also for oxygen/carbon dioxide.
4) Yes you can pollinate autos.... but if you have all feminised seeds, you will have to make a hermaphrodite plant to do so...

Do some more reading brother - go to the Newbie part of the forum, it's very helpful.... all these questions would have been answered from a few hours of reading! :P (just bustin your balls!)

HPS is the best way to go esp. for beginners. a 400 watt system will do everything you need. set the timer for at least 18 hrs. of light nutes every other day,if your using tap water make sure to let it sit with container open for at least 24 hrs. never water with tap water strait out of the tap, to many metals and chems. also be sure to have plenty of ventilation. good luck!
