150 Watt Or 250 Watt HPS

Hello, Check out my setup.. i'm only 2 weeks into vegging and so far it's looking ok. Once it hits 4-5 weeks I may start flowering.

Heres some pics. I've done big before and now i'm just testing with the glowpanel and see if it's really worth it and so far it's just OK. So after reading many threads, I've decided to put a cooltube but concerned about heat. I'm not dealing with it now running just the CFL's. So any suggestions for lighting and ventilaton design to this tent which is sized at 2'x2'x5'11''.

Below is Pics of Setup

Growlab 60
Glowpael 45 LED
23watt X 3 6500K CFL
King Air 2 Speed Fan
2 x PC Fans for In/Out
GH Flora Nova Series
Victor Fly Catcher
Digital Timer
DWC Setup 5.5 gal.. -- (I just figured out that 3 gal square kitchen containters would be better and I could fit 4)

The temp runs in there around 66 - 83 degrees during night/day
Humidity is 33-58

ph is good, goes up sometimes
I like the flora nova series since no mixing and is ph balanced

ppm gets high over a weeks time.. needs to be stirred and mixed through out the week. I've changed water once per week.

So I think i've done enough talking and wanna get some input on the design of lighting and fan power for this small grow area for a female roomate.

Thanks

-V

I would go 250, once you get a cooltube to cool a light you might as well have a bigger one. I am a little worried about your temps as far as DWC is concerned. Do you know what your water temps are? Ideal temps would be around 68. Once you start getting in the mid 70s you might start to fight root rot. That means additives like H2o2, hygrozyme, sub culture, more air or a water chiller. But some people run into more problems than others. I started mine off in 5 gallon DWC buckets this time for my new 400w cab, my temps wouldnt get below 80 so instead of possibly battle problems i switched over to Hempy Buckets, i had mine started in net pots about with roots about like yours and transplanted to the hempy buckets. The speed of growth is amazing, much like DWC. They are much more forgiving as far as temperature and Ph goes. Plus you can pretty much make them out of any container so you can make them fit. I dont think you were looking for this as a response, its early, im high, i just felt like sharing. This seems like your first grow so i want to see it go well. If you like your setup now i understand, its a nice setup. But yeah back to the question go 250. If you want any info on hempy buckets let me know, good luck.

i actually have the same question as i am looking to buy a growlab 60 and was wondering what would be best for it. How do you like the tent? let me know. thanks!

can you also get a pic of the tent all zipped up?

your looking good so far however i would say you could cut a lot of heat problems if you would just go soil, you could get 4 10in pots in there use a 250HPS get around 1-1/2oz per plant that's not bad for a 250w or you can get the hortilux super HPS you get like 32000 initial lumens that bulb will hit you for like $80 or $90 but its very close to a 400w bulb you could get a little more bud with that

Sorry about the late response man. About the GL 60. I love the tent. I also respect the quality and design that was put into the tent.

Depends what light I go with. I'm really looking into the 250w OR 400w NOW. light cool tube and will probably run a ActiveAir Blower System or a Air In-Line Booster Fan, 8" fan for the cool tube. I probably need some advise if anyone out there on this question.

So far the tent is good for vegging. Perfect for a mother plant, or maxing out a 250w/ possibly 4 females, and ofcourse good ventilation.

heres i pic i just took w/ my phone. see how discreet it is, right in the middle of my kitchen...hahah.. i have no dining table.

SMP...i once felt the water one time and it was warm.. I know for a fact that it does get warm.. So I am going to look into switching over very soon or when i get the hps light. I heard that coco and pearlite mix works good..is there anything else in the mix? Also can you show me a pic or describe how I can make a Hempy Bucket to max out 4 in that GL60.. What do you recommend?

And also I was looking into the 250W or poss a 400W.. is that overkill?

Incl. are some pics i just snapped w/ my phone. .and i just found out about the root as i saw your response.

Thanks for ur resp. So if i go 400W or 250W and soil, how much heat dispersement do you thnk i will need for this small area? is there really much difference in terms of heat and yield?

Yeah hempies are easy. I hear lots of good thing about using coco, i am using 60%perlite 40%vermiculite. As far as fitting 4 into the room i would just go up to home depot or walmart and look at small bathroom trash cans or at 2/12 gallon buckets. The best part about hempy is you can make it out of pretty much any container that doesnt have holes in the bottom. Here a link to the hempy thread, if you need more specific info on anything just let me know:joint:

I'm going to look into that, for now I just won't flower this grapefruit kush and make it a mother. Then I will have to start cloning or getting a new strain and start to use the Hempy method in a 2.5 gal container w/ pearlite and verm. mix.. no coco since i heard it changes ph. So i'll keep it simple. Then I was really thinking about doing the 400w but i'm afraid of the heat inside the tent. So how powerful of a fan should I use for the light or will this work? 8" Inline fan "

or a 6" Inline Fan w/ 188 CFM

or one of these? 180 CFM ActiveAir Blower System

what is your input?

Well out of those fan i would say 180cfm, the other 2(booster fans) wont work worth a shit. Once you put some type of restriction on them(ie light, filter) they wont move shit. The third one is a squirrel cage fan, it will move air good but they are generally louder, but i dont know if that is a concern of yours. If you have the money then this would work. 400w hps w/cooltube and 6in inline fan. A little over $300

If money is a problem then you can get that same light for $120 http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=47929
then buy i cooltube of ebay for $20
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360152041265&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX&refitem=110384994557&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget&_trksid=p284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%252BP%252BS%252BIA%26itu%3DFICS%252BUFI%252BUA%252BIA%252BUCI%26otn%3D4%26ps%3D10
heres how to make it
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=62161(there are lots of tutorials out there if you dont like this one)
then by a stanley blower from home depot or walmart
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5384374
And use it like this
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29341(if you search google for stanley blower mod there are tons of examples and setups.)
Hope this helps. Oh yeah i have a 400w hps with 6in cooltube and the stanley blower, my flowering box is 20"x24"x60", my box stays at 80 all sealed up, a couple of degrees cooler would be ideal but its close enough.

Thanks After careful thinking.

HTGSupply 400 watt High Pressure Sodium Grow Light
CoolTube 6 Reflector + $70.00
Standard 400w HPS Bulb

$230 *Light Assy. w/shipping
$50 *Stanley incl mod accessories

an inline fan would run me 120..so I"d go with the Stanley and also change to 80% perlite and 20% verm.. so it can store a little bit more nutes and water. ph shouldn't matter since flora nova is ph stable.

Thanks again. here some new shots of the GrapeFruit Kush.. and here is some other purps i picked up.. not sure what strain... can you tell?..

Sounds good, just curious, where did you read about adding more perlite to hold more nutes? Im just curious because vermiculite holds more water than perlite, so it seem like you would want more of it than perlite. But as far as nore perlite goes you can use entirely perlite if you want so 80% diff wont hurt anything. As far as your purps, im to jealeous of people that can buy it from a store so cant comment.:fire:

sm, i may have confused you.. what i meant was that one thread recommended to use 100% perlite due to ph can remain stable. The Verm would change the ph just slightly.. but also holds more nutes/h2o than perlite. So instead of going 100% perlite, i was thinking 20% coco or verm. what do you think?

I"m going to mother this female for a minute, seems like the Glowpanel 45 is working quite well What I"m planning to do a SOG and get another small tent for the mother.. Use the GL60 tent to Flower with a 400hps to yield every 2mos..

A little update.
I accidently bent the tip too much and snapped, i just let it ride and it's been 3 days..i'ts getting real bushy. Here's some pics.

SM, i went to get some perlite today and it crossed my mind that I should use a 250W in there just so i don't run into heat issues. So if i go that method. Should i go with ballast on outside or inside.. like the ones below.

ss2 250w 150.

ss4 250w $201

or if I go with the cheap way, what kind of issues would I run into. comparing if i would go with the ones above.. would heat be an issue with the ballasts built-into the light?

i'm still leaning towards the stanley blower as well.

Thanks for your input in advance.
ps. i tried cloning 2..but so far doesn't look too good.. clonex and ph water rockwool.

Yeah the ones with the ballast built in are supposed to run hotter but i have never tried one that is just the word. I dont use rockwool or clonex for cloning. I use coco or peat pellets with the cheap $5 schultz rooting powder from home depot/walmart. I always get mine to root, i just had my dutch passion blueberry show roots in 10 days, which is apparently really good for that strain, let me know if you need any help cloning.

Hey Sm, they veg looks great so far.. the roots looks good too.. i'll post pics when i find my SDcard. Neways, My 2 clones i tried to mk died.. So i'm going to chuck the rockwool and get some peat. Do you think they'll grow if i put them in the same room and change back to 24? should i put cover in there or not? it's about 80-85 in there with 45% humidity.

Since i don't have a tent now for the mother i will put it in my closet w/ the led. i'm going to flower couple after i clone and veg.. this is so i can test the strength of this strain. I hope it all works well then flowering w/ the 400w cooltube. I will order it this week.

THey have this 400w pkg w tube/balast for around 230 and then the 4" inline blower + jr carbon filter. the whole setup is going to run me 4bills but i think it will pay for it self in a couple of harvests.
