12 plant stealth-ish setup

Hey guys..

well, for starters I have been vegging 10 plants for about 2 weeks from seed. I have recently decided to switch from the closet that they are in, to a rubbermaid box using two 50gal tubs.

The closet had poor ventilation, no odor control.. and i couldnt modify the cabinet(dad). So it was a necessary move.

ANYWAYSS... I have been waiting on some key components before I can get this thing finshed.

I just recieved my 1 gal grow bags today and noticed that I can actually fit 2 more plants than I originally anticipated!

Lighting:
2-200w envirolite (daylight)
8-100w equivs.

Ventilation:
2- 4" desk fans.
1- 4" inline fan with carbon filter.

I plan on cutting the bottom 50gal tub where the grow bags are positioned.. so that most of the bags will sit in the lower white bin (giving me more room for vertical growth).

the center of the bottom 50gal tub will remain intact so that the vanity fixture will remain at the same height.

I'm planning on mounting the 200w envirolites vertically from the top bin.

I want to make a wire cage that I can surround the bulbs with so no parts of the plant will touch.

I ordered both bulbs.. they came.. one was broken.

I have to send it back and get a new one.. should be like 2 more fucking weeks!

Hey KillHit,

Followed you here. Saw the new pics of the box, looks good. Didn't realize that your lights would be mounted on the bottom of the box. Thats an interesting design decision. It should help the fluoros last longer as the heat will be rising away from the ballasts and spirals/U's. Which from what ive read is the main cause of cfl degradation over time.

Watch closely when the plants start to grow and touch the cfls, the last time i used them the plants got a slightly burned at the leaf tips where they were touching the cfl glass spirals. I was using 24w bulbs as well. I'm very interested to see how that light mounting works for you. Keep it up man.

edit: Nevermind. went back and re-read what you wrote. The enviros from the top is a nice idea, sorry about the broken bulb. IN the picture that shows the grow bags, what are the sockets for? I'm assuming extra lighting on the ground of the box. if so very smart idea. and definitely watch the temps on the test run. Two 200w enviros, and the extra cfls will get pretty hot, you may actually need that extra exhaust we were talking about.

Good luck and keep it green.

yes the fixture on the bottom is for additional lighting.. I have Y-sockets in each one so there will be 8 bulbs below.. and the two enviros on top..

unfortunately i ordered the 4" inline exhaust already.. and would prefer not to upgrade to a larger one.

and the point of the wire cage around the bulbs is so that the plants CANT touch the bulbs.

i guess it was a huge fuckin mistake ordering that exhaust before recieving input. the fan is only 128cfm.

THANKS FOR ANSWERING MY EXHAUST QUESTIONS IN A TIMELY MANNER!)(absolute sarcasm)... which is the exact reason I fucked this up.. thanks guys.

Dude, blaming other members for your screw up's is not exactly the way to get people to help.

That is to say at the least a very unusual design for a grow box, so basically you going into uncharted waters on your own.

There are some cool experienced members on here that will most certainly help but you have to be very specific about what you are asking and give as much detail as possible.

It is very hard to make a suggestion or give advice when you only put up 3 pictures to go by.

And by the way, what was the question?

Nowhere in any of your comments did I see a question about exhaust, just a bunch of statements saying what you plan on doing.

Did you come here to tell me just that? Because ive seen this design plenty of times.. not saying its been perfected, but it has absolutely been used alot.

check some of my threads and maybe you'll understand my frustration.

after making threads for my exhaust questions or any other question for that matter i have recieved little feedback from experienced growers.

Actually the 128 cfm is pretty good so dont kick yourself quite yet. Yea sorry i'm a "newb," but i did well over 8 months of research on here and else where before i even started posting replies. Even for both of us being a newb the information is out there it just takes the right keyword search;-).

Around here somewhere there is a formula for figuring out how much exhaust you will need for a certain wattage of light. You should definitely try to find that.

Now for the math. As a general rule most experienced growers state that you need to exhaust your grow room anywhere from once every five minutes to 5 times every minute. Now i'm guessing here bc i do not know the exact dimensions of your box but i'll estimate more rather than less here.

Estimated dimensions of your box:

4ft long x 4ft tall x 2ft deep.

Therefore the cubic footage of your space is 32 cubic feet.

Now you divide you fans cfm by youre actual cubic footage.

so you get 128cfm/32cf = 4 times a minute

That means you'll be exhausting your entire grow box 4 times a minute. Now that puts you well within the general recommendations i could find. So you're looking good as far as i can tell. Again you're never gonna know until you put your box through its paces.

I still recommend the trial run and then adjust you're ventilation as needed.

So keep it up man and dont get down on yourself. Ha even us newbs can figure stuff out if we put our heads together. Remember that all those experts you're knocking got that way by doing exactly what you're doing now, asking questions, taking what they get, making mistakes and learning. The best way to learn is to fail you just have to keep plugging away.

this is a thread showing my design, not asking any questions. Smoote was making a statement based on his own observations and my previous question in another thread about active intakes.

that exhaust question... was 5 days ago. a thread with zero replies.

i really dont appreciate the way you go about giving your advice and speak in the way that you do. peace

thanks smoote.. i wasnt knocking you at all, i appreciate your help.. its the ones who dont give helpful advice and respond to a post that doesnt even pertain to growing="their expertise"

Haha got ya i knew you weren't knocking me, just frustrated. I'll try to help you as best as i can but i've only worked with these rubbermaid tub grow boxes once so my experience is limited.

Oh and ps. my two question threads have a total of 160 some views, and only 5 replies, 4 of which are my own replies to either bump my thread or to give my progress on answering my own questions so that if anyone were to have the same question and come across my thread they could have an answer or start from where i left off. So i know where you're coming from.

Keep it green.

Edit: just read your reply on the dimensions, looks like my estimates were close but too large. However thats a good thing that means that my estimate of 4 times a minutes is actually low and you'll will be exchanging the air a bit more than 4 times probably more around 5-6 times a minute with out doing the math.

and 5-6 times per minute is ideal/recommended? correct?

well i will take you're word for it and use those trial runs to be sure.
