1000w HPS OPEN hood distance?

How far typically is the optimal range to keep my 1000w from my canopy? The hood is just a generic wing type, not air cooled in anyway. I have it at about 23"-24" with temps at canopy level at 75f-79f. Whenever I try to lower it a few inches more or so the temps go up to 81-83, and I'm tryin to go bybthe general rule of thumb and not let it go above 80 .

Should I be fine with 24" away? Anyone else here keep theirs around this distance?

24" is just fine with a 1000. If it was air cooled you could lower it. when I ran bare bulbs I had to keep them about 18-24" away

I ran mine between 18" & 24". Just be sure you have good airflow across the tops. You can get to a point of diminished returns trying to get the lights closer. The closer you get, the smaller the coverage area. At 24 you're golden.

Check the temp inside the canopy as well just not the top either heat will build under leaves

I have the same set-up in my flowering room. Usually I keep the plants 18 inches from the light. However, there are some strains that will burn at 18 inches. So you have to watch the uppermost fan leaves when she gets near the light. They will be the first to turn brown. BigSteve.
