I'm not sure about Nitrogen, but with age, some chemicals get protonated (Get H's on them). Thats why ether explodes if you keep it over time. The nitrogen might have gotten protonated and become NH3 (ammonia) since it is a year old, and thats the smell you smell.

I am no pro, but my DIY carbon filter works great, and has no odors. The DIY one posted in the 101 grow faqs looks identical to that ozone cleaner minus the casing. Lightwise, what i found to be better was using T5 fluoros for veg, then hps for flowering. Altogether a t5 system and 1000 watt...

What would you guy's prefer for veg state? 150 watt hps = 13000 lumens 100 watt mh = 8500 lumens

If you're worried about heat, you could run 1 of each as metal halides are slightly cooler than HPS bulbs, but If not, dual HPS bulbs would be better for flowering as they have more of the red spectrum.

did you make sure you have proper drainage in your cup?
