Lil Roach attempts a COB build.....

Here's my ugly concept light that my intent was just to get a feel for this type of lighting. I had used a computer power supply and boosters to run the lights and mounted it in my existing HID hood. I think I spent all of $150 for the whole thing because I had a ton of computer parts laying...

Lil Roach attempts a COB build.....

That was/is certainly a concern of mine too. I had built another concept light with the same COB and shot temperatures there and now with this light. Amazingly temperatures of the area directly around the COB and even the mounts were room temperature. I can touch the heat-sink right up to the...

Lil Roach attempts a COB build.....

The diamond plate is actually pretty thin/light. I'm actually on the fence about putting it in as right now I feel I may have a little tweaking to do and the plate will be in the way. Cost List with links: T5 fixture: $40 I bought it for the bulbs and it sat in my basement for about a year...

Lil Roach attempts a COB build.....

I drilled and tapped the cross-members to the sinks. I opted to go with what I thought was the best bang-for-the-buck COB...the Cree CXA 3050's....for $12.50 each it fit into the budget....with the option of upgrading in the future. I didn't cheap out on the driver though. I went with...

Lil Roach attempts a COB build.....

I'm hesitant about starting my own COB build thread on here as there's many builders I consider experts here in RIU. There's amazing lights that someday I hope I can equal to the degree of quality and detail of Supra, Cpt. Morgan and others. While these builds are the tops in quality and...

    Limo's CXB3590 build

I'm done hijacking this thread....I'm sorry for that. I did get everything wired today though..... I guess I should hang it and.....oh.....grow some weed under it.

    Limo's CXB3590 build

Interesting. I read someplace that there's a degradation of light with lenses, but not with reflectors. I suspect it depends on the quality of the lens. Since I'm running the cheaper 3050's with less lumens would I benefit from using these lenses or is it just a waste of time?

    Limo's CXB3590 build

I bought them here: http://www.dx.com/p/68mm-aluminum-alloy-reflector-cup-for-cob-ingegrated-led-lamp-silver-386749#.Vjt8q_mrS1s Be prepared to wait about a month to get them as I believe they have an 8 year old rowing the boat from China to the US as their delivery method.

    Limo's CXB3590 build

I have a question for Supra, Capt Morgan and here......I've noticed that all of you run your COB's "bare" without lenses or reflectors. Now I'm not all that savvy about photons and such, but with the 115 degree spread with these COB's it would seem to me directing a more focused light spread...

    Limo's CXB3590 build

I've gone cheap on the COB's....3050's for now....will be upgrading as time goes on. I shot temps of the area around the COB's on a different light and where the clips are located it's almost room temperature. A friend of mine calls those "roach clips". I tried the Ideal mounts for the 3050's...

    Limo's CXB3590 build

Nice build...nice looking grow. I'm in the midst of my own COB project. I'm on a more limited budget than some of you though. I took a crapped-out T5 6 bulb fixture, gutted it, and am nearing the end of the COB conversion. I opted for an active cooling on the 4" x 6" heat-sinks (not...

    Another Cree CXB3590 DIY thread

Ok.....I understood about 1/2 of that (yes, I really am a computer tech....but honestly...math is rarely used). I'm not sure of the actual amperage going to each COB....I've been just going by volts. The 3050's are rated at 43v and I'm running 'em at 36ish volts. I don't know if it matters...

    Another Cree CXB3590 DIY thread

I just built a trial COB set-up...it's too ugly to show, but it was my intent to learn about this type of lighting by getting my hands dirty and mostly winging it. I know nothing about BIN's and other LED specific lingo....All those acronyms hurt my head. I read most of this stuff and my eyes...

    Do you use Advanced Nutrients?

I've been on RIU for 3 years or so and have read about 30 of these AN threads during that time. Here's how it always goes: 1. Someone comes on and pens a post saying they're using AN products and ask everyone's opinion about the product. 2. The first few pages of replies typically has most...
