    LBT420, I'll agree. Where do you think the adults are? I've been looking at this damage for 3 weeks now 4 weeks I've not seen one adult.

    The photos below are the plant, and its leave showing the white damage. The black appears to be feces? I don't see any movement. Also it appears on both sides of the leaf. Spider mites for me were an under leaf thing.

    Was that left over winter? The finer roots broke off when pulled months later. You're a gardener, I'm always amazed at the small sized root ball of a 14 ft sunflower!
